You will not be able to miss Nelson in London. Towering over all of the holiday apartments in London, Nelson’s column stands proudly in Trafalgar Square, The column was built to of course celebrate the life of Admiral Nelson who died in 1805 in the Battle of Trafalgarin. The monument was built in the space of 1840 to 1843 and it cost £47,000 in those days. Made from granite from Dartmoore, the Nelson status is actually made from sandstone. The four lions at the bottom were only further added in 1867. The column further features four bronze panels that are the French guns which were captures from battles in St Vincent, Copenhagen, the Nile and Trafalgar. This was not the end of the story though as 2006 saw the column be refurbished at a further cost of nearly half a million pounds. When they discovered that the column was actually four metres shorter than it should be, they extended it, as now the column stands at 52 metres tall from its very bottom to the tip of Nelson’s hat. The monument had initially been designed by a committee who agreed to the site which would be also near to the National Gallery, which had also recently been built. A competition decided which design they would go for and the winner was William Railton who wanted one single Corinthian column with four lions sitting proudly below it. Steps would lead up to the lions and the original plan was for the column to be about 203 feet high but this had to get lowered down to 170 feet because they thought it would not be stable enough. With the base having been made from granite, they decided that the shaft should also be made from the same material. Lord Nelson now stands over your short let London and he will not be going anywhere. As a main attraction for any tourist who comes to visit the city, his victory over the French will always be immortalised for time to come. Lord Nelson, we do indeed salute you!
