1. You can temporarily suspend higher goals or bigger goals. The higher goals may indeed have some basis. But higher goals tend to form splits that contain elements of all or nothing. It has got to get to this level, or it will not be at all. 2.You have talents that have broad applicability. Goals may be going into a narrow band. For example, look at the mantra of making money which becomes a narrow band in some cases. Other measures are missed and other things don’t lend themselves to easy measurements. Someone may have a great voice, but if they don’t figure on getting paid to sing, they don’t bother. The gift does apply, but not necessarily or always to the narrow band of making money. 3. You aren’t achieving your goals and it may not even be close. You couldn't have known in advance that these seemingly good plans would fall flat. If you aren’t achieving your goals, give yourself permission to reset to goals that are likely to be achievable. If you keep thinking marathon, and you’re not getting there, maybe for now say I’ll run a breezy 10-k. That is a goal you can get to and then also feel good about achieving, so why not reset to that for now. 4.You could be wrong about yourself, this issue, or anything else in any number of ways. That tends to especially happen within assumptions. You tend to assume what you need to find out and you put assumptions ahead of what you are finding out. You do want to get out in front of assumptions at time, and not just let assumptions be the leader. It is helpful to realize meany things are quite variable and it should be expected that it will be that way so you aren't surprised. Look at the batter in baseball. Should he be expecting fastballs all the time, or should he expect that in a given trip to the plate the pitches he might be looking at are variable. What also happens is that you go for goals that have higher or longer horizons. In the meantime, you do have a right to address present concerns, whatever your longer goals are. As I do have this present concern, I can reset some goals to address these present concerns in a fair and equitable way, not necessarily expecting that I must always compromise against longer term goals. 5. You may become attached to the goals, which have become a source of tension and then even tending towards an alternate reality. In the meantime, you still need to deal with surrounding circumstances as they are. Someone was upset and said, “ I just about have no money”. And the friend said,” calm down, and look at the reality of the situation. If you had a few million dollars, it would be in the bank and you would still be standing here wearing the same clothes and walking around in the same way. “ Goals are to a degree necessary but watch out for the ways in which they can form into attachments, the type of attachments that take you away from finding good grounding in present realities.
