BEVERLY HILLS It was a spring night of love and romance at theSaban Theater over the weekend. Through a trio of soloists Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez andAi-Ai de las Alas fans saw the colors of spring in the flowers, heard its voice in the songs magnificently offered. Yet, the colorof love remained in the imagination, as if something was beneathit, the whole story doesn t show. There is a privacy about it noseason can give you. Cramped between elbows, perfume and conversation, the audiencewaited when the right combustion jelled. Producer Ms. Ana Puno had put in the perfect mix of necessaryingredients for a splash of a show, where all her artists (wholoved what they were doing and what they hoped to accomplish on thestage amid roars of joy and approval from an over excited audience)were there for everyone. Martin was a showcase with a big, big splash. The spotlight wasinvented for him. He sings the first note and the audiencestarts applauding, and when the brilliance of his interpretationgets to him, he yells the high note at the top of his voice. Itwas Martin again, naturally. For a moment, one thought that his reactions were just a touch ofexpression but that s what makes it delicious. Even with hispretense of doing a vanity-wounded roar, while goofing around withPops on stage. It takes a supreme level of confidence when he plays hiswisecracking self with brilliance. Well, Martin wasMartin. He could take the rigid strictness of a song andimprovise it into something uniquely his own, (let us not forget,he is Bert Nievera s son) not necessarily sad, but vulnerable. The highlight of the evening was when he sang their love song tothat one with large, black soft eyes in a chronic state of Pops, the woman he once loved. And still on the topic of love duringthe presscon. I forgot to ask him the very thing I most wanted toknow: whether he loved him, that father of his. For decades, Pops has been one of the musical concert s brightstars, dazzling us with remarkable performances. Today, hervoice was better than ever, for it had a new found maturity. The heartache in the sad songs and the frenetics drive of theupbeat number create an extraordinary impact. She has developed marvelous gestures, which, when put on theshow, became the most unexpected words, as she does here ownselections. She was absolutely gorgeous and so glamorous and glitzy sheseemed to be sweating glitters. I recall an interview, years back, when she said that as aperformer, you leave yourself open to hurt and that everyonemakes mistakes, the idea is to make as few as possible. Today even as she sings about sadness, frustrations and love lost,I could imagine that these were painless performances. Ai-Ai sparkled and bubbled, as she sang for those who loved but notalways wisely. She conveyed the message that love is what life isall about love of family, love of work, love of those who made herwhole again that here s enough love to go around and that youshouldn t be afraid of getting hurt and loving less. She was the scene stealer who sent fans into tremulous roars. Hercomedian s instincts were infallible. She knew how to chasethe unimportant things away, then she sings like butter. Musical concerts even in theaters are a collaborative art form. Ms. Ana Puno s involvement in the production was total, herenthusiasm limitless and irresistible. It has its own look, anapproach and a style always with a clear, precise unshakeable viewof her goals. Make everyone happy! As the lights went up and the singers onthe stage converged, the thundering applause spoke for a gratefulevening. Thank you, dear Ms. Puno. It was terrific!
