Taking your motor home for a regular service at an approved garage is essential. Although there are many things you can do yourself there are also many things that should be done by a professional. Make sure you go to a garage you know will finish the repairs to a high standard because often paying a cheap price twice over is a lot more expensive than paying a little more for something the first time round that will last longer. Make sure your check your tyres regularly especially if you are about to go on a long journey in your motor home. If your vehicle has been stationed for a long time, there may be cracks in the tyre walls or flat spots where the motor home has been resting. Make sure you also check tyre pressure. If it is wrong this will wear your tyres quicker and use more petrol, also double check the pressure of the spare tyre too as this is often forgotten. Check the battery before you start off on your journey because there is nothing worse than breaking down half way to your holiday. Make sure all the lights are working too. This is for the safety of others on the road as much as your own. Don’t just check the bulbs however, double check the fuses too. If you only use your motor home once a year, make sure to turn the key a few days before you want to set out on your holiday, this is because stale fuel can cause your vehicle not to start and again, will be a horrible feeling the day of your holiday. There are a couple of general maintenance tips that seem obvious but that many still forget to do. Just giving your motorhome a clean will protect it from rust. A pressure hose is the best and easiest way to do this. Also make sure your fridge is completely clean. By using bicarbonate of soda inside this will stop odours and also kill any bacteria. Finally check your motor home handbook, this will tell you of the chemicals that are safe to use in your water system. By flushing out and sterilising the system this will kill any bacteria and also make you aware of any blockages. Cleaning out the plumbing system is the last thing you want to be doing on holiday so by having a quick read of the handbook before you go, this should help prevent any problems. Maintaining your motor home can be done in whatever season throughout the year so by carrying out these simple checks, you will save yourself a lot of time and money.
