A holiday in Edinburgh is certain to include a visit to the famous Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace and perhaps The Elephant House café where JK Rowling famously wrote the first Harry Potter book. While all these must-see attractions are sure to impress, they may leave you with little left in your pocket for the remainder of your holiday. Fortunately, there are plenty of things to do in Edinburgh that don’t cost a thing. Firstly, a hike up Arthur’s Seat is a favourite activity of tourists and locals alike. The hill soars over the city and offers views of its skyline and the surrounding sea. Though Arthur’s Seat may seem daunting from down below, it’s actually not that difficult a climb and it should only take you about 40 minutes or so to reach the top. But before you head off, make sure to layer-up; it’s quite windy up there! Also, don’t forget your camera- the view is breath-taking. For similarly brilliant views, a hike up Calton Hill in the city’s east end is also a fantastic way to take-in Edinburgh’s incredible beauty. A walk up to the top of Calton Hill is less strenuous than a climb up Arthur’s Seat, so it may be preferable if your legs are already tired from walking up and down the city’s famous hills. Another gorgeous outdoor setting is Princes Street Garden. Nestled next to the famous shopping street, Princes Street Garden is the perfect place for a picnic or afternoon stroll. If you have kids with you, there’s a play area in Garden’s far west corner. While the kids play, you can enjoy stunning views of the castle towering above you. One of the biggest perks of visiting any city in the UK is that most museums are free of charge. The National Museum of Scotland is a great place to learn more about Scotland’s history, culture and industry. Also impressive is the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, located on Queen Street. For something a bit more unique, the Fruitmarket Gallery (located near Waverly Station) always features a handful on interesting art exhibits. Thus, if you’ve come near the end of your budget during a holiday in Edinburgh, there’s no reason to fret. In fact, once you have your transport and Edinburgh hotel booked, there aren’t many other necessary expenses. With so many families cutting back on their annual summer holidays due to the nation’s current double-dip recession, the Scottish capital is a great choice for a cheap yet rewarding getaway.
