One day, in order to inspire his disciple, a master gave him a stone and asked him to make his every effort to sell it in the vegetable market. At first sight, the stone was very big and looked beautiful, but his master said, "You should never sell it but try to sell it. Observe carefully and ask more people and then tell me how much it could be sold in the vegetable market.” This disciple left at once. There were so many people in the vegetable market, but in their eyes, this stone could be acted as the small ornaments for they children to play with, or they could regard it as the weight so as to weigh vegetables. Therefore, they offered a price, which was as low as several coins. “It is nearly worth several coins.” He returned and said to the master. “Go to the gold market now and ask people there. Remember not to sell it, but to ask its price.” His master said. The disciple went back from the gold market happily and said to him, “how excellent these people are! They are willing to spend 1000 coins buying it.” “Pay a visit to jewelers and never sell it.” His master said. It was unbelievable that jewelers should be willing to spend 50000 coins in buying it. Since he was unwilling to sell it, they continued to raise prices to 100000 coins. But he said, “I was not about to sell it.” “We are willing to spend 200000 or even 300000 coins. As long as you sell it, we will buy it no matter how much it is!” the jewelers said. “I can’t sell it, but just ask its price.” He said. In his eyes, these people must be mad, for he thought that the price of this stone in the vegetable market was high enough. When he returned back, his master took the stone back and said, “We don’t want to sell it, but you get it now. The true value of a stone is determined by your understanding. If you always live in the vegetable market, you just have the understanding of the market and you will never realize the higher value of things. After reading this story, I think that we are like stones, and we should have a good understanding of the world and ourselves, therefore, we will enhance our position and value in society.
