Syrian Foreign Ministry Spokesman JihadMakdissi has denied that his country is resorting to politicalreasons in accepting international observers on ground, expressingastonishment at comments made by the United Nations' peacekeepingchief Herve Ladsous that Syria has denied visas for threeobservers. "The agreement's text, which has recently been signed in Damascuswith the advance team of UN observers, stipulates a clear andexplicit consent of both parties on the nationality of observers,"Makdissi said in a statement to the pro-government al- Watan dailypublished Wednesday. "More than 124 nationalities are welcome in Syria," he said. Makdissi underlined that there is no rejection from the Syrianside, adding that the basis of the agreement is that Syriapractices its full sovereign rights and protect the safety of theobservers, "particularly that Syrians have concerns over somenationals, whose countries have a main role in imposing sanctionson Syria that targeted the livelihood of its citizens." But Ladsous said Tuesday that Syria has already denied visas tothree international observers without reasons. But he declined todisclose their nationalities. He said there were "verbal comments" from the Syrians about theinternational group "Friends of Syria" that groups around 70countries such as the United States and some European Union states. The Syrian government has reportedly said it would reject visas toobservers from the group.
