Why Need a Paxil Lawyer When You Have a Baby with Birth Defects?

The FDA issued an alert to both healthcare providers and consumers as GlaxoSmithKline made changes on September 27, 2005, in their warning label on Paxil (paroxetine) stating the risk of birth defects. The drug’s side effects include Paxil Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in the newborn babies. The recent study conducted by the two on Paxil side effects indicated an increased chance of the newborn developing Paxil birth defects, specifically cardiovascular defects or congenital malformations, in cases where the mother was under Paxil medication during the first trimester of the mother’s pregnancy.

Paxil, just like any other SSRIs, has been associated to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in the Newborn (PPHN). The condition is devastating to the newborn as it affects the heart and lungs of newborn infants. The condition renders the baby unable to properly breath as the blood vessels are constricted. As such, the oxygen is cut off from the blood consequently causing damage to other organs, namely the brain and kidneys.

Even after the babies have received treatment for Paxil PPHN, they may not recover while those who do may acquire long-term problem with breathing.

Because of its popularity, Paxil is being used by millions of people worldwide. It accounts for more that $1 billion in annual sales for its maker. However, such popularity is mired by Paxil being in the news for complaints of severe withdrawal symptoms as well as for having the risks of Paxil suicidal behavior and increased violence in children and adolescents. A mother who suspects her child was affected by the drug she was taking during pregnancy should consult a Paxil lawyer. Note that Paxil is classified as a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI).

The FDA has issued a warning to physicians that extra care should be observed in weighing the potential risks and benefits of prescribing or renewing Paxil prescriptions to mothers during their pregnancy or even while breast-feeding. It is also important that patients are knowledgeable of the drug’s side effects, risks, and treatment alternatives.

However, it was announced by the FDA in December 2011, that there is no clear correlation between PPHN and the use of SSRIs during pregnancy. Although there are two research studies suggesting a link between the use of SSRIs while pregnant and the development of PPHN, there are however three studies that did not support the same finding. The FDA has issued an advisory to women who are under antidepressants and at the same in their pregnancy not to stop.

Exposure Risks of Paxil Prenatal

Paxil, just like any drugs, has the potential to influence fetal development. This may result in congenital defects in newborns, including withdrawal symptoms that can torment babies for days or weeks after birth.

A research study appearing in the July last year issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology have shown that Paxil medication during pregnancy is correlated with an increased danger of right ventricular outflow tract defects. Although such increased dangers is quite small, the researchers are still warning physicians to consider alternatives when SSRIs are prescribed to women who plan on bearing a child.

Meanwhile, a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry (07/11) suggests that use of SSRIs during pregnancy is linked to an increased risk of having a baby born with autism spectrum disorder. Researchers found that the risk doubled when SSRIs were taken during the 12 months prior to delivery and quadrupled when SSRIs were taken during the first trimester.

What Paroxetine used for?

Paxil, paroxetine by generic, is a class of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is used to treat:

Panic disorder

Social anxiety disorder (SAD)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

Because of its dangerous side effects, disgruntled Paxil users should consider contacting a Paxil lawyer as they eye filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
