It is great to have high goals, essentially aiming high. But at times this can be counterproductive and we can at least consider working with modest goals. 1. One reason is that we have a right to work with modest goals. Society often tells us we should be the best, or better and sometimes that inhibits us from taking a look at where we are actually at right now and some of the realities that are specifically involved. While everybody has a right to think big, dream big, there are ways in which that type of thinking can box us out of the uncertainties involved with that. If I am looking for high percentage options only, I might miss out in that sometimes good or viable chances are there that present themselves in more modest fashion. 2. Modest goals might involve looking for a range within the goal, rather than making it ultra specific. For example, I just went out running with the goal of an 8 mile run at the track, conditions were good for that, the wind was just about nil and the temperature was fine and I was feeling good. But I actually needed a power bar as I was suddenly annoyingly hungry at mile 5. I decided not to push through this. Now, I could have set my goal range as 4b to 8 miles and rather than pinpointing 8 miles as my stand alone goal. The whole continuum of this goal falls in the modest range so basically I am setting my goals in the modest range so I don’t chastise myself for not reaching an exact point on the map of this particular goal. The expectional range for this goal might have been for me to go out and run 20 miles, which I have done and can visit another time. So you can still keep in mind your exception range for your goals, even while now approaching within the moderate range. 3. Working with modest goals helps us escape delusions of grandeur. While it is true that we might indeed have excesses of talent that we haven’t even looked into yet and should keep an open mind about, high mindedness creates pressurized situations and the larger goals are more like an oppressive heat. Modest goals are helpful to lighten up a bit. 4. You may just want to fish this side of the pond. While there is something to be said for the excitement of deep sea fishing, and getting out to the continental shelf, sometimes contentment can be found just fishing by the shore. There are situations to be found and worked with within the modest goals as well as the larger ones. Big goals also tend to have longer and extended horizons and while I am looking into the far distance of those faraway goals, I might not see what is right at hand. 5. I may be facing too steep of a climb, and this is particularly daunting if the goal is a solitary pursuit or not done with the help of others. Oh well. Modest goals may sometimes more tend to incorporate the help of others and this vision shouldn’t be that once I pass into the goal, I don’t need the help of others anymore. There was a popular song sung at Woodstock, get by with a little help from my friends. Finding achievement in goals can and often does involve at least some moderate help from other people in many and varied ways.
