Born in 1861, in Nanhai County, Guangdong Province, Zhan tian you is a famous engineering expert in China. Although he came from an ordinary family that was engaged in selling tea, he became interested in machines when he was a child, so he often played with his neighbor’s children and made different kinds of machine models by muds. Besides, he took his home’s striking clock apart secretly, diddled with and touched inner components. In addition, he always asked some questions that their parents were not able to answer. In his twelve years old, he left his parents and went to study in America with his ambition of learning western craftsmanship. Many of his classmates spoke highly of the rapid development of American’s industry of machinery, train, steamer and telecommunication; on the contrary, they took negative attitude towards China’s future, however, Zhan Tianyou had the belief of studying hard so as to make China prosperous, and he said that China would also have trains and steamers in the future. In 1867, he graduated with high honors from his school. In May, the same year, he was admitted to the Department of Civil Engineering of Yale University and his major was railway engineering. During his university, he studied very had and graduated rom it as the valedictorian. In 1881, among 120 Chinese students who returned to China, only two people got a degree, and Zhan Tianyou was one of them. Nevertheless, because of Qing government’s weakness and incompetence and laggard economy, all of China’s railways were built by foreigners instead of by Chinese people. In 1905, Qing government nominated him as the chief engineer to built Beijing-zhang Jiakou Railway. At that time, some foreigners laughed him, but he made his determination to accept this task. Hence, he started opening mountains and building bridges immediately. No matter how danger the work was, he made his every effort to do it, because he realized that it was the first railway that was built by Chinese people themselves and he should build it well, otherwise, foreigners would laugh at China and Chinese engineers would lost confidence, which will lead to China’s falling behind developed countries forever. Hence, he spent four years in finishing a railway of more than 200 kilometers, which made foreigners looked us with completely new eyes.
