During the Warring States Period, a king called ZhaoHuiWen had agem. Gradually another king called QinZhaoxiang knew that and ordered a minister to go to the state of Zhao to discuss with him, “HuiWen king, we are willing to exchange 15 cites with you for the gem.” After hearing that, HuiWen said to the ministers, “What we should do? The state of Qin is so strong, and if we give this gem to the king, but he digs in and doesn’t give 15 cities to us, we will lose a lot. On the contrary, if we don’t give this gem to him, and he become angry with us and send troops to attack us, we will also suffer a lot.” Suddenly, a minister suggested, “we can invite Lin Xiangru, who is both clever and brave, and certainly he will think off good ideas.” When Lin Xiangru came, Huiwen king told the situation to him in detail. “We are false to disagree with the state of Qin if its king wants to exchange 15cities with us for the gem. In turn, it is the state of Qin’s mistake if they get the gem, but they are unwilling to give 15 cities to us. Therefore, in my opinion, we had better send this gem to the state of Qin. Lin Xiangru said “In your opinion, which one should I send to the state of Qin?” Huiwen king asked eagerly. “If you don’t have someone who is competent, I am willing to have a try. If Qin kept promises to give cities to us, I will leave the gem in the Qin. On the contrary, if Qin reneges and doesn’t want to give towns to us, I will be responsible for returning this gem to our state.” In the process of exchanging the jade with Qin for the 15 cities, Lin Xiangru took good advantage of his intelligence and bravery. Finally, instead of killing him, Qin king treated him well and sent him back to Zhao. After reading this story, I realize our eastern civilization had already told us how to deal with difficulties and challenges flexibly and bravely. Hence, when we are in trouble, we should keep calm and think twice at first, and then take active actions, and eventually we will get what we want.
