The political crisis in Karnataka following differences within theruling Bharatiya Janata Party has snowballed into a serious threatto the 10-month-old D.V. Sadananda Gowda government, with theformer Chief Minister, B.S. Yeddyurappa, exerting pressure on theparty's central leadership to meet his demand for a change ofleadership. And, at a public function on Sunday, Mr. Yeddyurappa came out witha surprising statement: he showered praises on Congress presidentSonia Gandhi with reference to the manner in which that partysupported its leaders when they faced problems. In the case of theBJP, leaders were "fixed" with problems in a bid torout them from politics, he said. This declaration of Mr. Yeddyurappa indicates that he has taken atough stand – either the party should yield to his demand orhe may even quit with his followers. It may be noted here that prior to the visit of Ms. Gandhi toTumkur about a fortnight ago to pay her obeisance to the seer ofSri Siddaganga Mutt, Sri Shivakumar Swami, whose 105th birth wascelebrated in April, there were reports that a senior Congressleader was in touch with Mr. Yeddyurappa. Sources in the BJP told The Hindu that 70 legislators, including 16Ministers who had been in Mr. Yeddyurappa's camp for the lastseveral months, have been invited for a crucial meeting on Mondayto decide on the future course of action. The strength of Mr. Yeddyurappa in calling the shots largelydepends on his support base in the legislature party and theattendance at the meeting will help decide on the next course ofaction even as several Ministers and legislators have been holdingdiscussions on the pros and cons on the steps than can beinitiated. A Minister, associated with Mr. Yeddyurappa told The Hindu thatvarious options were under consideration and serious discussions onthe next action would be taken on Monday after talks withlegislators and Ministers. "Mr. Yeddyurappa needs the support of at least 70 legislatorsto be successful in his pursuit for a change of leadership and thesupport of at least half that number to bring down the government. He enjoys the support and there is no doubt," he said. Apart from Ministers Shobha Karandlaje, Umesh Katti, BasavarajBommai, Murugesh Nirani, C.M. Udasi , M.P. Renukacharya, Raju Gowdaand V. Somanna who have submitted their letters of resignation toMr. Yeddyurappa, Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik Belamagiwill submit his letter on arrival in Bangalore. Another 15 legislators have reportedly conveyed to Mr. Yeddyurappathat they are ready to resign from the Assembly membership. In the meanwhile, Mr. Sadananda Gowda left for New Delhi, toapparently discuss with the central leaders various issues, including need to expand his Ministry — there are 13vacancies, with the Chief Minister himself supervising 22departments. BJP State president K.S. Eshwarappa, who was abroad, on returningto Bangalore, held discussions with Mr. Yeddyurappa and exudedconfidence that the crisis would be resolved. In another development, Ms. Karandlaje left for New Delhi onsummons from party president Nitin Gadkari.
