In 1635, Calderon Dela Barca, the last drama master of the Spain’s golden age drew materials from “the Legend of the Buddha” and “One Thousand and One Nights” and then he created a philosophy play called “Life Is Like a dream”, which made him immortal forever. This year, this genius lost both of his parents and started his career of being a palace playwright. “This tower is my cradle; meanwhile it is also my tomb.” As the prince of Poland, the protagonist Cesis Mondo was constrained tightly by the chain of fate, and he had to wear animal skin in shackles and waited for people save him from this cold and dark tower. He cried to God and wanted to make clear his crimes. Since God endowed birds with colorful wings, wild animals with gorgeous colors, and fish with flexible posture, so why God deprived his freedom? Like a living skeleton, Cesis Mondo was filled with resentment and sorrow. Before being immersed in the hopeless situation that he killed his father and married his mother, Oedipus had been adopted and felt kinship’s warmth. Unlike him, abandoned Cesis Mondo couldn’t move an inch, for the besotted monarch judged that he would become the most arrogant, cruel and rude. Hence, the monarch mercilessly imprisoned him secretly and ordered people to guard him all the time. After Cesis Mondo drank medicinal liquor, which was made of opium, henbane and poppy, he slept dizzily. When he was awoke, he found he was in the palace. As a combination of human and animal, he gradually lost his kindness and become cruel when he was in face of dreamy reality. The terrible omen of the old king finally came true. His son was a poisonous snake to human beings. Originally his mother died because of difficult birth, so he was likely to kill his father and became a cruel monarch. In the bemazed dream, Cesis Mondo was sent to the ugly tower. To avoid boredom, Calderon Dela Barca made the plot twist and turn and the fate of Cesis Mondo was up and down, which repeatedly stressed the topic of “Life Is Like a Dream”. In my opinion, life is so short that we should make full use of time to run after our dreams and enrich ourselves everyday. Finally, are you getting interested in this play?
