Most soccer players started playing in high school or even earlier than that. While some experienced playing for the junior soccer teams when they were still young, most soccer dreams actually started in high school. This is when it is pure pride to wear soccer uniforms and become a member of the school's elite soccer team. |
However, most soccer coaches are not into the idea of spending time watching high school players play. They think that aside from the soccer uniforms they are wearing, there is no amount of skills that makes it obvious that they are indeed playing soccer. While some of the soccer teams are doing really well, the bulk of them still seem to lack experience and don't know a thing or two about genuine soccer technique.
Let's take a look at a common scenario in a high school soccer match. Usually, the ball spends so much time in the air, with both soccer teams unable to make contact with it. Both teams are unable to connect more than three passes. And since the quality of the first touch is poor the rest of the play is not that good as well. Also, there was no combo play in the middle part of the game. Everything seems to be all over the place. The lack in technique is more than obvious, plus the players still do not have much confidence in themselves. It's a proof that not everyone who wears the most coveted soccer uniforms is actually that good.
What can be observed with high school soccer teams is that the players have individual competence. True, the potential is there but they do not have any idea how to play for the soccer team. They show much energy in possession but one can see that their actions are not coupled with much thought. There's no rhythm and there's no forward flow. In other words, there is no team strategy. Most of the scores happen by mistake or plain chance. When the potential is good, it means that the players have very high chances of becoming players someday. However, that all depends on the guidance and the coaching the kids are exposed to. It cannot be stressed enough to those who are wearing soccer uniforms that the game is not all about winning. Much of the techniques can be learned and mastered during a very difficult game. By exposing the players to rougher training and teaching them the true meaning of the sport, they are getting the help they need to excel.
