For some people ID theft takes a backseat to other concerns and for some it’s a priority. The reality is that there are many misconceptions and baseless facts related to ID theft which has made things confusing and perplexed for the victims. The way personal data is stolen is still a mystery to some people; however, here are some of myths and facts related to ID theft: A thief has stolen your credit card number, are you a victim of ID theft? Probably not, chances are that the thief will try to make a transaction with your credit card number, though it’s quite likely that your credit card company will block his attempt to do so. In order to steal your Identity, crooks require a lot of information on you, such as social security number, driving license numbers and a mailing address. What are some of the ways ID thieves steal someone’s identity? Majority of them stick to traditional methods of stealing your identity, these include: searching for documents related to your identity in your dumpster, stealing your wallet or going through your mailbox. Another method used to steal personal information is through skimming, which is swiping of your credit card twice, the first swipe of the merchant, while the second swipe is for the crook, so that he could record your credit card number and later use it to conduct illegal transactions. ID theft at the workplace is also on the rise, people who process information containing social security numbers and driver’s license numbers may be tempted to steal your personal information. Finally, another popular means of stealing personal data is through hacking. Criminals who are skilled at hacking can easily get information on hundreds of thousands of people with little effort. This shocking trend has gained ground in recent years and several cases involving massive server breaches are making the headlines on a daily basis. How can I find out if my ID has been stolen? Sadly, you may never find out. If your purse or wallet has been stolen and see a fraudulent transaction on your credit card statement you can take action. On a different note, you may never find out if that thief is also using your identity to engage in criminal activities. Unless you request a credit report, you’re likely to find out the hard way when you try to apply for a car or home loan. That’s because, once the bank conducts a credit check on you, they are likely to find a host of discrepancies in your credit history, all thanks to an ID thief. If you have lost your wallet or purse, the best course of action is to contact credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. How else can identities be stolen? Good question, if you use portable storage devices such as USB flash drives, then it’s likely that at some point in time, you must have stored personal data on it.
