At the northernmost part of the Pacific Ocean lies the Hawaiian archipelago composed of eight islands: Maui, O’ahu, Molo kai, Lanai, Kaho ‘olawe, Hawaii, Ni’ihau, and kaho’olawe. The 51st state is 2387 miles away from California or continental United States. It takes pride of its cozy and warm tropical climate with vegetation similar to jungles in South East Asia and Latin America. Its capital Honolulu has coastal airport named after the city where commuter buses, taxis, Honolulu airport limo and escalate limo services are the popular means of transportation. Other cities are Hilo located in Hawaii Island, Kahului in Maui island, and Lihu at Kauai. Famously, Honolulu’s nickname was Aloha or the Sheltered Bay, meaning peace, love, and compassion when translated in Polynesian. Formerly, Hawaii was once a pacific kingdom ruled by succeeding Hawaiian monarchs, Kamehameah I, II, III and IV and later by Queen Lilioukalani. During the rise of European empires between 1550s and 1778s, the archipelago was visited by Spanish explorers Juan Gaetano and Ruy Lopez de Villalobos and they made a report citing the discovery of the island. Afterwards, British explorer James Cook arrived with his party aboard HMS Resolution and Discovery; subsequently he gave Europeans an opportunity to explore the region. Like other Europeans, they searched there for resources, minerals or spices or lands that could be claimed for their country. The British influence can markedly be seen on the state’s flag that features a union jack to the leftmost corner. In 1791, Kamehameha I, rising from among clans and tribes, ruled and united the warring factions and established a monarchy. He was succeeded by future kings who imported European technology such as cannons, gunpowder and advisers. This was also the time when Christian missionaries came and evangelized inhabitants into Christianity and thus turning Hawaii into a Christian nation and ending the pagan religion. King Kalakua, in 1891, ruled a lavish way of life sending his kingdom into debt at the expense of his subject lands. Afterwards, he was replaced by his sister Queen Liloukalani, who made plans to reform the government and amend the constitution. At that time, there were already white US sugar planters in the island and with the aid of US marines who landed in the area, they overthrew the monarchy. Queen Liloukalani was forced to relinquish her throne, turning Hawaii briefly into a republican state. At the insistence of US expansionist in the US government, in 1898, new lands resolution was passed making Hawaii as the 51st state of the United States of America. The state’s land feature is dotted with tourist parks namely Kalaupapa National Historical Park which serves historical sites and Haleakala National Park for wildlife and nature reserves. Several volcanoes dotted the island, with Mauna Kea being the famous for its submerged half under the sea. It is higher than Mount Everest with its majestic peak climbing to 10, 200 meters high, if measured from the base. Additionally, other peaks are worth completing the list: Mauna loa and Kilauea in Hawaii Island, and Loihi underwater off the coast of Hawaii. Much of island’s vegetation is tropical where bananas, pineapples, mangoes and coconut trees can be found except for its endemic species. Endemic, technically speaking, means unique and used in ecology for animals and plants that cannot be found in other places. Being isolated for the rest of the continents, the island state features a number of endemic species that are nowhere to be found. Silversword, a plant with spherically arranged pointed leaves, is found in the slopes of Hawaiian volcanoes. Another is Maile which is a vine native only to Hawaii and contains a sweet smelling liquid similar to vanilla extract. It is now a threatened species and remains under US environmental law protection. Honolulu city is modern and contains a number of skyscrapers, white sandy beaches and resorts. Surfing is one of its famous attractions and people there conduct surfing competitions during summer time. There are airport and tour services in the state familiar for their hummer limo services, wedding limo services in Honolulu and Waikiki limousine svc. Exploring the archipelago can never be a problem as commuter transports are always available in the state at any time of the day. Hawaii presents a great place for anyone who wants to experience the hot summer of tropical beaches, the roaring waves of coastal beaches and a dazzling difference from the chilling winter temperatures of continental United States.
