So he jumped at the chance to testify before the U.S. Senate.Shorter is scheduled to testify tomorrow before the consumer affairs, foreign commerce and tourism subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee. Senator Byron Dorgan, D-North Dakota and chairman of the subcommittee, called for the hearing, which will look into steroid use in major league baseball and amateur sports, including the Olympics.The hearing follows recent revelations that former major leaguers Ken Caminiti and Jose Canseco used steroids. Major league officials also have been invited to testify.Shorter, 54, has a professional connection to this issue, beyond his athletic accomplishments. He is the chairman of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which conducts drug testing and oversees anti-doping measures of U super bowl jersey.S. Olympic athletes."I think this is one area in which I can use the credibility I've gained over the years, athletically and politically," said Shorter, an Olympic Marathon gold medalist in 1972 and silver medalist in 1976. He also knows of the drug's side effects, which include heart disease and hypertension. He hopes the hearing will impact those kids who have experimented with or are thinking about trying performance-enhancing drugs."I think you have to recognize that it is has gotten to where young athletes emulating their heroes and heroines know that if something isn't done, when they get to be that age, they are going to have no choice but to go on these drugs," he said. "And since it has gotten to that point, then something has to be done about it."
