Pellerin, born in Seoul and adopted by French parents at the age ofsix months, is a classic product of France's elite education systemas opposed to the hierarchy of Hollande's Socialist Party. She had a brilliant academic career, entering the InternationalBusiness School in Europe aged 17, followed by the Sorbonne and theelite Ecole Nationale d'Administration (ENA) -- which also educatedHollande and much of France's political class. She spent the first three years of her life in public housing inthe Parisian suburb of Montreuil before moving to Versailles. Pellerin, who told AFP she does not see herself as Asian, wasraised in a family "with left-wing values" and only joined theSocialist Party in 2006, before becoming Hollande's advisor on thedigital economy, which she calls a "lever of growth." She also worked for the campaigns of the last two Socialistcandidates, Lionel Jospin and Segolene Royal. Pellerin says she declined an offer to stand for an easy seat innext month's parliamentary elections. In France, ministers are notrequired to hold elected office. While resisting being pigeonholed as a young, non-white woman,Pellerin admits that "ticking all those boxes" bettered her chancesof joining the new government. Previously little known in France, the woman born as Kim Jong-Sookwas feted by the Asian media during the gruelling campaign. She told AFP that in Korea "there is a kind of collective guiltabout having sent away children for adoption during the 1970s. Now,they're trying to renew their links and to see what these childrenhave become." Her passport still carries what was her first name at birth --Jong-Sook -- which she for a long time mistakenly thought meant"perfect woman." "It's a first name that's a little out of fashion that can betranslated as 'clear, transparent'," she said. Pellerin says that in her spare time she likes to paint, cook, playclassical piano and sing karaoke. She is married to Laurent Olleon, who also attended the ENA and nowworks at France's State Council that provides legal advice to theexecutive.
