How to Fight Dust Allergies

Home Improvement
Dust can pose a very serious health risk to those individuals who are allergic or too sensitive to house dust. In itself, dust can cause irritation to the lungs and the respiratory system. If you are allergic to dust, keeping your house and carpets clean is essential.

The charity Allergy UK estimates that there are, at least, 12 million people allergic to their own home. Some of the most common allergens include pollen, house dust mites, mould and pets. 59% of indoor allergy sufferers said their symptoms are worse in the bedroom. Not surprising, if you take into consideration that the average bed harbours have two million house dust mites and a similar amount is found in the average pillow. In an average home approximately 40 pounds of dust will be produced over the course of a year and a single ounce of dust can provide shelter to 40,000 dust mites.

House Dust Mite

The house dust mite is a tiny creature that is present in most of the houses. It mainly lives in bedrooms, mattresses, pillows and carpets as part of the dust. It usually causes no harm, but some people are allergic to the tiny droppings of the mite.

It can be a little difficult to minimise the effects of a dust mite allergy. However, there are steps that can then be taken to minimise symptoms and provide allergic relief. It is essential to keep the house to a minimum. Carpets need constant hovering and sofas and chairs have to get cleaned regularly. Bedding needs to be changed at least once a week.

Vacuum Cleaners to Fight Dust Allergies

Regular vacuum cleaners, with a conventional vacuum, can stir up dust and release much of it back into the air. The best options to reduce these tiny pests are HEPA vacuums, central vacuums or vacuums with an electrostatic filter are better choices.

HEPA Vacuum Cleaners

High-Efficiency Particulate Air or HEPA is a type of air filter. HEPA filters are designed to target smaller pollutants and particles. HEPA filters trap small particles that may cause problems for allergy sufferers and others with health problems. Reducing or eliminating those particles will keep the air cleaner.

Central Vacuum Cleaners

A central vacuum is a kind of vacuum cleaner that has a central unit on a remote location. Central vacuums are often thought of as the most allergy-friendly vacuums because they eliminate the re-circulation of dirty air inside your living area.

Vacuum Cleaners with an electrostatic filter

Electrostatic filters use electrostatically charged filtration to attract tiny particles. The dust and dirt attract, and then trap, fine dust particles. It works almost like a magnet and can be an effective method for trapping dust mites.

Besides vacuum cleaners, there are also some other products that can you to keep your home clean from the house dust mites such as vapour steam cleaners and pesticides. An HEPA air purifier can also help you to reduce the dust mite population.
