For some people sleep comes all too easily, and they find themselves in cloud cuckoo land before their head even touches the pillow, without any need for any kind of sleep aids. However, it's not this way for everybody. For many people, getting to sleep at night can be a real struggle. The good news is that there is help at hand - and it doesn't even have to be medicinal insomnia help. What follows are some simple mental tricks that can help you to fall asleep. First things first, before you try any mental sleep aids, you need to make sure you are prepared for sleep. This means getting your bed and the room you are sleeping in just right. Make sure the room is perfectly dark, and the sheets are fresh and comfortable. In addition, be sure to avoid stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine in the hours before you go to bed. Now, once you're lying there in bed, try not to worry about when or whether you'll fall asleep. Instead, just breathe deeply and try to clear your thoughts. You can prepare your mind for sleep by taking deep breaths through your nose, then breathing out through the mouth. Focusing on this will help to clear your mind of other thoughts, and cause you to relax more. If any thoughts do creep in while you're resting, quickly acknowledge them and try to refocus on your breathing. This is similar to meditating, and will help to relax your mind and body. If you still can't sleep then you're going to need a little more insomnia help. The alphabet can be helpful. Simply come up with a topic, like food or countries, and then try to think of one item for each letter. Work your way through the alphabet, and if you get all the way through without sleeping then choose a new topic. Alternatively, try to imagine you are in some serene, calm place, far away from your bed. It could be a lush, quiet forest or a deserted beach. Now imagine yourself being there, relaxing and having a good time. Try to remain focused on your vision - if any other thoughts creep in, quickly acknowledge them and refocus on where you are. All the while, continue your deep breathing. Lastly, another good trick is to think about everything you did during the day, in a chronological order. Just like watching a film in your mind, go over in your mind everything you did that day, starting from the moment you first woke up, up until the time you go to bed. Try to remember as many details as possible, but avoid dwelling on anything that caused you to be upset or angry.
