The basic theme of sitcoms is comedy and to judge the popularity of a sitcom is to see how many seasons it is being aired. The logic behind creating a sitcom is to form a long term connection between the actors and the audience. M*A*S*H is one of those sitcoms, that was aired in the U.S. in 1972 and this series was aired successfully for nine seasons. The re-runs of this sitcom is still being aired on TV today. This show is about a group of American Doctors based in an U.S. camp in Korea during the Korean War and the story line revolves around the soldiers, nurses, patients and a priest. The other most watched sitcoms are the animation sitcoms. The most popular animated sitcom is “The Simpsons” this show was first aired in the year 1987 and is still going strong today with the 500th episode being aired recently. This sitcom has more of a cult following than any other animated sitcom. The story line is about a dysfunctional family of five and the town’s people of Springfield. The Simpsons is the longest running sitcom of all time in television history and has paved the way for other animated sitcoms like Family Guy and South Park. This is the only animated sitcom to have won more than 50 Awards and 27 of them being Emmy Awards. “Friends” is another American sitcom that has had ten seasons and is a huge hit worldwide. This sitcom was an absolute rage and will have re-runs forever. The story line revolves around six friends who live in central park and share two apartments. This sitcom has received 100s of prestigious awards and is named as one of the best sitcoms of all time. The show’s leading cast members were initially paid $22,500 per episode for the two seasons and by the end of the ninth and tenth season they were being paid a million dollars each, per episode. The DVD sales of “The Friends” series are still doing great business the world over. Some of the other famous sitcoms of all time are Everybody Loves Raymond, The Cosby Show, Just Shoot Me, Arrested Development, Scrubs, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Seinfeld and Frasier they are all award winning sitcoms. The re-runs of these sitcoms are being aired in over 60 countries and are translated in just as many languages. What makes these sitcoms have so many viewers all over the world is, that anyone watching a sitcom can actually relate to the characters, and it helps to forget all their worries for the time they are watching a sitcom. A sitcom episode is normally timed for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. The average time for each episode is reduced to 22 minutes a day due to Advertising or commercial brakes. In a sitcom there a four to five main characters and the story line would normally revolve around Family, friends and kids. The production of a sitcom does not cost much. The entire season of a sitcom is generally shot in a studio in front of live Audience and when it is aired on TV, laughter tracks are often included. Off-late reality TV shows are becoming more popular. But I don’t see sitcoms becoming a thing of the past anytime soon.
