Venice's Secret Sites

Travel & Tourism
There are few cities as truly unique as Venice. Airport boats across the lagoon are the perfect way to see a cityscape that doesn’t compare to anywhere else. From your launch you’ll pass around the city in the way that visitors have traditionally seen it for hundreds of years. The Piazza San Marco and the Doge’s Palace are among the most popular and iconic sights alongside the Ponte dei Sospiri – the Bridge of Sighs. For all of the sights that you’ll read about in the guide books, there are plenty of places that are hidden away – secret spaces that suit the discerning traveller prepared to do a little research. These are sights that you might not see from your Venice airport boat.

Explore the Secret Gardens

While to travellers arriving by Venice airport boat it might seem like a city of stone, there are actually a huge number of beautifully kept gardens hidden away behind the walls. It might strike you as a challenging environment in which to create breath-taking blooms, but the locals certainly seem to be doing something right. Some of the gardens are regularly open to the public. This includes the Giardinett Reali, or royal gardens, which are located in between St Mark’s Square and the lagoon. There is no admission charge for members of the public wanting to enter the gardens and they form a fantastic place for taking a stroll. Once you’ve satisfied your garden desire, you should make sure that you visit the Santa Maria della Salute, where you can enjoy the Baroque architecture and incredible views from the cupola.

The Bacari

Whilst many of the famous sights in the city are close to the large public squares – often you’ll think most readily of the Piazza San Marco - the real life of the city takes place in the small twisting back streets. The narrow streets and bridges are the life support system of the city and they are the location of many scenes that just aren’t visible from the Venice airport boat. One of the best places for visitors to head while snaking through the back streets are the bacari. These are small hole-in-the-wall style establishments often identified by their colourful wine bars. Many of them only have a couple of stools or tables in front of them, but they attract swarms of locals to indulge in great value food and drink and an al fresco social atmosphere that it’s hard to beat.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct. If you’re looking for a Venice airport boat , Shuttle Direct provide pre-booked shuttles to major destinations all over Europe. Wherever you travel, Shuttle Direct can make sure that you don’t miss your car on your holiday abroad.
