Usually, the grout will remain dirty in spite of repeated mopping or scrubbing. Even though they have faithfully cleaned and mopped their tile or stone floors, the grout look dirty. |
Many homeowners and property managers tell me that they don't even remember what color their grout was originally. Cleaning the grout found between tiles can be an arduous task, but generally the solutions are simple.
To get your grout looking new again or at least clean there are specific steps that must be taken. The very first step is to ascertain the type of floor you have to avoid damaging it with the wrong cleaning agent.
First of all, it is important to keep a few general tips in mind before beginning any process to clean dirty grout, regardless of the size or scope of the problem. Some cleaners can cause damage to surfaces, so make sure to test a small amount of cleaning solution on a discreet section to make sure no discoloration or other warping occurs. Cleaners that contain bleach may be particularly problematic for colored tiles or grout, and should definitely be tested first. Households with small children, pets, or people with serious allergies should also consider the chemical contents of commercial cleaners before use.
When the floor has been mopped, apply the acidic grout haze remover. Don't let it dry out. Scrub the tops of the tiles with a deck brush and each grout line. Vacuum the liquid from the floor. Mop the floor and vacuum again then repeat this step with another mopping. Use fans if you have them to speed up the drying. This will let you see if you missed any spots or if the floor needs another cleaning. When the floor has dried, look for any discoloration in the grout as well as for stains etc. If necessary, clean those spots again. If the grout looks uniformly colored and clean, apply the grout sealant. When applying sealant there is no need to soak the entire area. Wipe off any excess sealant as you go and you may use an old towel to prevent the excess drying on the tile and grout and leaving a white residue. The clear sealant will keep dirt and liquids from soaking into the grout and getting it all dirty again.
