City officials pleased with positive showing from green cart project - China Plastic Bucket Mould

Business,Business News,Business Opportunities
Jocelyn Another tax grab! I won't use it, I have a garburator and don't have any grass in myyard, why would the City force everyone to have one of these binsand charge everyone??? John Great, I need a box to put my tools in. Mike So the bottom line is: How much is this going to cost me extra onmy bill every month? This City is turning into a joke. City Hall islost all touch with reality and now they want to turn the wholeCity into a landfill with garbage bins all over the place...whenare we getting a pink bin? KJ in Calgary To all those complaining about the bins out front...quit yourwhining....not all of us have oversized garages and not all of ushave back alley access. Janet I like the idea of the green carts for composting! I would compostbut we have no need for the resulting product either. Knowing thatmy grass clippings, old potting soil, etc.

is being put to good uselessens my guilt of throwing it in a plastic bag that will sit in alandfill for years. I have no problem separating our garbage from recycling and nowcompostable materials. I think we're still use to the idea of beingable to throw everything away and the idea of separating our"waste" is still taking time to get use to. Sure it takes extratime to do but we can't continue to throw stuff away that can bere-used.

It really is such a waste. Our planet's resources are notlimitless. We really do need to rethink how we consume ourresources. If reusing these resources helps, then why not? Ava I live in one of the test sections and love my green bin.

I have acomposter as well as a garburator and still use this green bin andthink it's fantastic. The bin is smaller than the recycling andgarbage and takes up little room. My garbage is picked up every 2weeks and isn't even half full. It takes no time to do it- it'seasy and it's efficient. Those that think it's a waste won't behappy until the landfills are extremely full and we have to shipour garbage elsewhere and taxes go up even more because of this.KEEP THE GREEN BINS! Andrea I am living in a pilot test community and I love my green bin.

Itsabout a third of the size of the other bins and not a big deal tostore at all. They also give you a smaller container for scrapsthat fits under your sink. To be honest, I only put out my garbageand recycling bins once a month now. The green bins are a greatprogram - I think most folks are going to love it. David Can we get a bin to throw all the tree-hugger drivel in! If youwant a green bin ..

fine, enjoy it. Landfills can work quitenicely also. Some very nice neighbourhoods in San Fran are built onlandfills. Ross To Stephen yes the pins do work well I have them where I live Ialso have Racoons the ones in my area are working in pairs or moreand have figure out how to open these pins so unless these coversget a little heavier or weight down some how we have problems.

Andy I am quite perturbed by all of the comments regarding the eye soresthat these bins create and how lazy people are. Aren't landfillsfairly large eye sores on their own?? We sound like we're a bunchof rednecks from where else but Alberta. Many other cities havebeen doing 3 carts for years and people in those cities don't seemto get so upset over helping the environment. Why do we insist onmaking people believe that Albertans really don't care about theenvironment.

Stop whinning and get with the program. I'd like thereto be less garbage in the city by the time my son is my age. Stephen I can't believe the comments. I can honestly say you don't get it.Ok, nix the bins, you will run out of landfill in less than 20years. Then you are going to ship your garbage somewhere.

So youthink your taxes are high now just wait. Look what Toronto has tocontend with in its short sightedness. I live in a rural part of Hamilton now Racoons galore never had anissue with the bins. I put the bins in the garage works fine.

Stopwhining start thinking! I think you need a two tier system . Don'twant to separate the waste then you pay someone to do it the choiceis yours. In fact I think you should have a one container garbagepolicy. You have more too bad. If you actually separated your wasteyou would have less than a bag every two weeks.

The only thingmissing in my mind is a yard waste pickup. That way your yard wastein the spring and fall is composted too. rnee Geesh, big deal you folks have to make room for anotherbin....yawn. Save the environment, let your Grandkids have afuture, let alone the environment, even research how cities likePortland exist...my Aunt throws a ton of stuff in her compost.

Butplease stop complaining. GG89 Love it! Can't wait to get the green bin! Chi We would like to do something to help the environment but addinganother cart seems to be too much. I think the black bin could be modified into two compartments:non-organic and organic so everybody can separate their garbages byputting them in accordingly. On the garbage pick-up trucks, samethings, two comparments to separate them. So, there is no need toadd another bin/cart, can keep the same pick-up shedule and mostimportantly, no more fee to collect.

Mark H The biggest problem I have is that garages are not big enough tohouse all these bins. If I get a green bin delivered I will put itin/on top of my blue bin the following week because I don't want tofind room for another. I will recycle the green bin as it is awaste :) Andrea There seems to be a break from reality when citizens here seem tothink that garbage just magically disappears from your lane into lala land. The reason for composting is to deal with excessive wastethat "needs" to break down properly otherwise it sits and stays inlandfills.

Talk about plastic bins being an eyesore, so too willlandfills one day when you've thrown away everything you grew tiredof and the landfill becomes your back yard. Let's get real, thosewho fail to participate are simply self-centred. It's not worthpennies a day for a better society? And just for what it's worth, let's consider the perception as to why plastic bins are an eyesorebut huge metal Hummers and SUV's are 'beautiful'? Go ahead complainbecause that's probably the most contribution you've provided toyour community. Angry Danny GO AHEAD.....send me a green bin.....I need a new rain barrel!!!! wanda I am shocked at the other comments.I know the human race is lazybut the caveman thinking is beyond me. It is so selfish not to tryand help out the enviroment issues,I bet you all drive hummers too!I would be happy to have all three bins.

Toronto has had thissystem for years and even they arnt't whining! You should all beashamed and grow up. MelB Do you all close-minded negative people realize that Calgary is notthe first city to consider curb side composting? My family in NewBrunswick has been doing it for years now. My friend mentioned thather family does it in Nova Scotia. If you ask me Calgary is alittle behind in implementing this system. It's pretty sad to see that so few people care about ourenvironment in this province.

With all the things we do to polluteour environment throwing some stuff in a green bin seems like apretty small thing that we can do for the future. And it's pretty simple. If you don't like green or blue bin thendon't use them! No one is going to go through every single one ofyour garbage bags then knock on your door for not putting things inthe appropriate bin. So take a look at the big picture and stop complaining that thecity is trying to do something good for the environment.

Yesthey're doing it for the environment. Not for the money. Those ofyou who cannot not get that need to open your minds and your eyes. Not just a bit but A LOT! Downey ENOUGH with the freakin' bins!!!!! If you want to compost go rightahead!!! I don't want to have to pay extra! Damn city is run by abunch of hippies! ENOUGH! Jay I won't use it. Plain and simple.

I have a guarburator in my sink,so I don't have kitchen scraps. My yard waste in the spring andfall is far too much for this little bin, and I will not put a bitat a time in it, for 12 weeks straight, while storing the excess inmy garage. Just another tax grab, and someone at city hall isbuddies with the company that makes these bins and trucks to pickthem up. it is all about the money, not about saving the planetfrom the terrible grass clippings.

If we have to get this bin, it will sit in the alley, with thebucket inside it, untouched by me. And the alley ways are a messwith carts all over the place now, it is like driving bumper carstrying to avoid them. Some of this stuff is getting a bit silly.Perhaps provide community centre areas for organic recycling, andpeople can use them if they chose to. That is all we need. Oh wait,no, we also need a new city council! Justin I agree that 2 bins is enough and I think that the city shouldstart fining people leaving their bins in front of the house oranywhere they can be noticeably seen from the street / curb.

Itdrives me nuts seeing streets lined with bins in front of homes oron driveways. Happy in Calgary I do not like the idea of the compost. I think that it ridiculousthat we will have to buy composting bags for that little container.I have also heard from my inlaws who are part of the pilot projectthat they have to use 2 of these bags in the container as the bagesstart to break down (as they are designed to do) before they canput the waste in the bin; doubling the cost of the bags that youhave to buy. The only thing I will be using the bin for is my lawn clippingwhich makes the bin useless in the winter.

And I don't think thebin will be big enough for all of my clippings. Not a good idea! Lynn We would happily use this. I hope the green bin is a littlenarrower than the other two though. With lawn clippings or leavesonly for a short time each season, we don't need a huge green bin.Our family of five fills the recycling and garbage bins to about2/3 per week.

Glad to see the green bins coming, as I haven't beenusing the composter we own since we don't need the compost. BA I agree with Ian. It's time for people to roll these bins to theside of the house, or keep them in the garage if they have room. These bins are an eyesore that too many homeowners simply leave atthe front of their house. The front streets in most neighborhoodsare beginning to look like alleys.

Money Grab I don't even have enough room in my yard for the blue and black binthat I have now! I certainly would NOT be willing to pay foranother eyesore, nor would I be willing to pay for special bags, buckets ect. that I would not use. Just another scam to make thecity money. I do not want a maggot bucket no matter what the color! sergy The green bins mean another cash-grab surcharge, for somethingthat's already organic and harmless to the environment.

Why do we tolerate the City CHARGING us for core services, such asgarbage pickup. That's what taxes are for. Instead, we pay extra for the core, freeing up money for bike lanesand other idiotic social engineering projects. The nanny-stateprojects are what they ought to try and charge for. GRB No more colours no more bins.

Seniors cannot push, pull or carry any more bins. Settle down ,start using some common sense ! indy500 I am so sick and tired of this bin program. It has turned our onceupscale neighbourhood into a place that is an eye-sore. Plasticbins evrywhere all week long, no place to park for at least 2 daysper week, my backyard looks like the back of a Walmart.

Our entireCity looks like one big landfill and your city councillors justkeep piling on the manure with their justifications. We need a binjust for their lip_service !!!! You can "Lead a horse to water but you can't make himdrink"....that will be me not participating any further....its theonly way to stop this madness. Paul Just more stealth taxing. They have raised the tax how many timesalready on the blue bins? I am getting sick and tired of the green agenda and the trendyfanatics pushing it.

ds My sister lives in one of the areas with the green buckets. Sincethis project was put in effect her bucket and a few others on theblock have been knocked over with slop all over the street. What amess and smell. Also how about bringing in the coyotes, skunks, andother animals in for a feast. Thanks Calgary.

SORRY - THIS IS A NOGO FOR ME. I WILL NOT USE IT. Brent I would like the burning barrel introduced to Calgary. Snerd Another TAX GRAB BY COUNCIL...

We are charged for pick-up of a decomposable! As we pay for it inpick-up, WHY CAN'T WE GET IT FREE for our own yards???? We pay for pick-up and disposal and they PROFIT TWICE on US! Duh, Ithink there is something smelling at City Hall. Stephen Guess what you are going to run out of landfill sooner than later.Where are you going to put everything? It just makes sense that youseparate your trash. Be responsible. Or I have a better idea forthose who don't separate the waste charge them $100 per week on thepickup and add it to their property taxes.

I don't get all thistalk about the new west the old west that has nothing to do withthis. I now live in Hamilton and we have curbside green bin andrecycling. I like it and its responsible. Glenda I have a composter in my back yard had it for years so why would Ineed a green bin ... simple .

the green bin goes into the blackbin ... problem solved !!!!!!!!!!!!!! City council shouldconcentrate more on important matters and not shoving more bins atus. Jodes I'm in a test community and it took a few weeks to get used to theschedule but it's fine. Tuesday green and blue, every secondWednesday is black.

The small bags they give you decompose prettyquickly so you have to put your green out every week even if it'snot full. I learned that pretty quickly but after almost fourmonths I've still only had to rinse out my green bin once so reallynot a big deal. Would like to see cheaper bags once my free supplyruns out, I see them on sale here and there but the cost reallycould prohibit some people from carrying on with the program. Jolene Living in a half cul-de-sac with no back alley or garage, thesebins are a pain in the patootey.

I love recycling and think it's great, but on my street, everyoneputs bins behind eachother's cars, and some people get ridiculouslycrabby about that. Because it's a half cul-de-sac as well, if someone parks near thebins, the city won't pick up the garbage. Even better. So now wehave several overflowing bins because of location.

Sorry, I won't be participating in the green carts. Blue and blackare MORE than enough. Karen The green bin won't be large enough for my yard waste. I don't havetime to recycle everything because I am stranded on the transitsystem 3 1/2 hours each day. Need to feed and look after my kidswith the remaining two hours that I have left over each day.

Shayne I don't understand why we don't have brown bins for cardboard andclear bins for Plastic Bucket Mould and red bins for electronics and yellow binsfor pet waste and white bins for bathroom waste. A shiny bin forshiny waste and a dull bin for dull waste. I want to see a curblined in a solid never ending full spectrum rainbow of bins. Inturn this should deter homelessness by turning the streets into agarbage dump making being in a home more attractive. Ian Hmmm black bin, blue bin and now a green bin, come on Calgary welive in the new west not the old west where it was ok to have SLOPBUCKETS on your front yard!! Most people seem to think it is ok toleave these unsightly bins on the front of their proprty and nowthey want one more!! Hmmm Nicole I am one of the residents in a test area and absolutely hate thisidea.

Not only is the city wanting to bill us, should this go through, wewill also be responsible to buy paper compost bags for yard wasteand Plastic Bucket Mould compost bags for the pail they provide. So we get three bills essentially and nothing out of it. Also, these bins are too big if you are just a family of 4 to 5.There is no way that this can filled with organic waste in one weekand I already have mould growing inside this bin. Not healthy ifyou ask me. I am all for reducing waste but why not give the residents acompost bin for our yards so we, as citizens, can reap the rewardsin our own yards.

Not only that, but put the day that the bin is collected on thesame day as garbage pick up rather than the day before. As of rightnow, I am putting the green bin out on Thursday and then everyother Friday both the blue and black bin go out. The following weekis the green bin on Thursday and the blue bin the following day.Very confusing. This needs to be seriously reconsidered because we are alreadypaying enough taxes and such and should this go through, we arehaving to pay the city even more.

Ann I look forward to a city-wide implementation of this program. Wetry to compost, but we don't have a garden, so we end up having togive the product away. Calgarians use a lot of treated water ontheir lawns; at least we can give something back to the environmentby composting the resulting yard waste.
