Do IT Certifications Really Matter?

Computers
In today's technology-based workplace, just about anyone can claim they are an IT technician. Information technology is the lifeblood of modern business, and can mean anything from knowing how to use a fax machine properly to the correct applications and means of installing a blade server. Most companies' definition of IT leans rather heavily toward the latter rather than the former. People holding IT certifications or degrees can reasonably expect to make a great deal of money at keeping corporate internal and external communications up and running smoothly.

While many people look at IT staff with disdain, the fact is that being an information technology person not only greatly increases an individual's odds of getting a good-paying job, but also makes him or her an indispensable part of a company's communications team. If a server mysteriously stops responding or the company intranet goes down, someone has to figure out why. IT technicians are the lifeblood of corporate communication, keeping important documents and private conversations secure and ensuring the infrastructure of a company is up to the demands the individual users place upon the system.

Skilled information technology people can even write their own tickets, becoming freelance trouble shooters at salaries rivaling or exceeding those of their clients. These personnel are generally "jacks of all trades" who can create a template for a new web page or diagnose malfunctioning hardware with equal facility. Some IT people even become corporate security consultants, manufacturing security algorithms to foil and even trap hackers who wish to crack into a company's proprietary data for their own ends.

As communications become more open thanks to the Internet, the dangers of cyber attacks and system failures become more obvious. Lost communication, even for less than a second, can result in massive losses. One example of this is the financial sector, much of which relies upon near-instantaneous fiber optic communications between key markets and corporate offices across the country and around the world. When these communications get interrupted or the data being passed back and forth becomes corrupted, businesses such as banks stand to lose hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. IT personnel make sure redundancies are in place to prevent crippling losses of information from becoming devastating or fatal.

IT people may also be called upon to do such tasks as testing and troubleshooting office networks, setting up one-touch dialing systems that connect the head of one corporate office to the head of another, or designing an office intranet system that won't allow employees to reach web sites or material that either doesn't belong in the workplace or they don't have sufficiently high network privileges to view. IT professionals save corporations billions of dollars globally every year by keeping authorized communications running and sites that may encourage employees to wander off task off the company systems.

IT certifications open many doors in today's competitive and technologically oriented workplace. Whether one installs routers for a secure wireless network or engages in corporate counterespionage, a certified IT professional has a unique opportunity to choose their own career path in the job market. There has never been a better time than now to consider certification in the information technology field, simply because there is such a universally high demand for IT people in every field of business.
