Yet another national-level laboratory is stepping in to track thedengue epidemic in southern districts to come out with reasons forthe massive dengue fever attack. The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) in Chennai, alaboratory under the Indian Council of Medical Research withexpertise in epidemiological studies of various vector-bornediseases, is getting into the field to carry out investigation insouthern districts which are reeling under dengue epidemic."Our team is in Tirunelveli doing an independent study. Wewill concentrate on all affected districts, including Madurai, andstudy the epidemic from epidemiological angle," SanjayMehendale, Director, NIE, told The Hindu on Tuesday. The scientific study and laboratory research will be undertaken incollaboration with the Madurai-based Centre for Research in MedicalEntomology (CRME) which is another premier laboratory of the ICMRwith an established track record in entomological studies ofmosquito borne diseases. While the NIE will carry out studies fromepidemiological angle, the focus of CRME would be on entomologicalaspects. Dr. Sanjay said that his laboratory was already in touch with theHealth Department/public health authorities and expert teams wouldvisit dengue-affected areas. "Our study will be on how thedisease spread; which common age groups are affected by dengue;attack rates; rate of incidence in urban and rural areas; andmortality. Hopefully, in a couple of days, we will start theepidemiological investigation," he said. Meanwhile, CRME Director B. K. Tyagi said that the laboratoryresults would be ready in a couple of days. "Three teams havestarted their investigation after visiting dengue- affected areasin Tirunelveli district. A fourth team is going there on Wednesdayand within a week we will come out with a comprehensivereport," he said over phone from New Delhi. The CRME scientists and entomologists are working day and night tofind out which mosquito vector is involved in the spread of dengue, either Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus. "Within a few days, the CRME will be able to pinpoint which of the two major vectorsare responsible for this epidemic. We will point out what kind ofbreeding sites are causing dengue fever and which kind of dengueserotype is involved in transmission on such a large scale,"Dr. Tyagi said.
