"The suspect said that he will not fight theextradition," senior Berlin prosecutor Martin Steltner said inan interview with the Globe and Mail. "The extradition process is very complicated in Germany, andit can take months, even years - - but not in this case," hesaid. "It will be much easier to get him to Canada." On Tuesday afternoon, a Berlin judge confirmed that Mr. Magnotta'sfingerprints matched those attached to the Interpol warrant issuedafter body parts from Chinese student Lin Jun were mailed topolitical party offices in Ottawa. Mr. Magnotta spent Monday night in a jail cell in Tempelhof, inwestern Berlin, deliberately choosing solitary confinement, Germanpolice said. Later on Tuesday he will be transferred to a pretrialdetention jail near the courthouses in Moabit, in central Berlin. "He spent that last night in police custody, in a single cell, without any complaints or special requests," Mr. Steltnersaid. He ate breakfast and smoked a cigarette. The prosecutor confirmed that Mr. Magnotta had admitted to hisidentity, but had not revealed anything about the murder or hisflight: "He didn't say anything about the crime inCanada." German officials said that Mr. Magnotta arrived in Berlin on June1, after taking an overnight bus on the 1,000 km route from Paris. They said that it did not appear that he had checked into a hotelor hostel. "From what we can tell, it looks like he stayedwith friends," Mr. Steltner said. If Mr. Magnotta were to fight the extradition process, he coulddelay it for years as it works its way through the many layers ofthe German justice system. Other famous Canadian-German extraditioncases, such as the one involving the businessman and politicalfixer Karlheinz Schreiber, have dragged on for years. "This case is different - - it's much simpler, because it'smurder and because he isn't fighting it," Mr. Steltner said. Mr. Magnotta has met with Canadian consular officials and now hasbeen assigned a German lawyer, officials say. Mr. Magnotta will "probably not be transportedcommercially" and will be sent to Canada on a speciallychartered flight, a lawyer familiar with the extradition processsaid in an interview.
