© 2012 Victoria Bowmann, PhD The holistic treatment for chronic constipation isn’t complicated but it is very comprehensive. It is important to include each aspect of the treatment and follow-up. If not, success may be delayed. This can prolong the time it takes to achieve daily healthy elimination. The more consistently one adheres to each point, the more rapidly the bowels will begin to work effectively. First of all, one needs to see their doctor and determine that there isn’t something else going on, and to discuss a low thyroid. This can contribute to constipation and should be corrected first. Just like a puzzle there are four corner pieces that build our foundation for success. They are water, oil, fiber, and probiotics. In addition to this exercises helps to keep the muscles moving and guts are made up of two forms of muscles. So taking a walk or working out, exercise helps as well as things we add to our nutritional program. The actual formula for calculating necessary water is based on weight. Divide the body weight in pounds by two; that equals the amount of ounces of water needed every day. Since the colon is responsible for the re-absorption of a great deal of water, hardened feces are a result of the lack of adequate fluids. One must be mindful in evaluating how much water they actually drink. The second piece of our puzzle is oil. Remember that water is hydration and oil is lubrication. The average adult needs 1 tablespoon per day just to lubricate the guts. A big man might need a little bit more and a petite woman a little bit less. However, the average is one tablespoon daily. Suggestions to consider are olive oil and flaxseed oil, although there are many good oils available. Select salad dressings with oil or add some to your vegetables. One can dip a piece of bread in olive oil and enjoy it this way as well. Another factor for a healthy bowel is the inclusion of sufficient bulk in the diet. “Garbage in - garbage out.” as the computer maxim goes. For our purposes, “bulk in - bulk out.” Obviously, a high fiber diet is recommended. For those suffering with chronic constipation, this frequently isn’t sufficient to restore healthy bowel function. If one doesn’t include high fiber foods in the diet, it is important to supplement with a bulking agent. Different products have different discomforts, including bloating and excess gas. These needs to be compared to decide what is best for you, since there are products available that are easily consumed and gently pass through one’s system. Probiotics have been mostly ignored until now although science is looking at their benefits. Unfortunately, most studies isolate one bacteria strain at a time. The control group in many studies utilizes a product with 7 strains. Although most of the research is inconclusive, there are some amazing results. One might not know specifically which ones are working on any given time and one doesn’t know how they are working in combination with each other; but, they are working. However, the way probiotics are taken is a factor in their success. My research since 1991 has been a unique method of administration, with a high success rate and response. Most people get help, relief and often resolution to their condition with probiotics used in this way. The factors contributing to healthy elimination in cases of chronic constipation may be multifaceted but they are not complicated. This program has helped many, safely, with few failures. Healthy elimination can be accomplished with a change of routine. It takes some discipline. However, it’s definitely worth the effort. Learn Dr. Victoria’s unique method of using probiotics.
