Does your home not quite meet the needs you have as a family? Perhaps, when you purchased your home your family was a bit smaller? Do you have a home where you want to better utilize the space, but are not very sure where to start? If so, then it may be time to hire a home remodeling contractor. A home remodeling contractor is able to help you convert that space into a usable area of your home or perhaps help you design a room addition so you can accomplish more. But how does one go about selecting a home remodeling contractor? Is it as simple as doing a web search for “home remodeling, Minneapolis” and hiring the very first one you see? After all, wouldn’t only the best Minneapolis home remodeling companies show up in a web search? Hmm... not necessarily. You will need to do a bit more homework, before hiring a contractor to remodel or add on to your home. And, while this might seem like a daunting task, it is one of the most important elements of the job. After all, you don’t just want someone who knows how to swing a hammer, you want someone who will listen to what you need and do the job as requested for a reasonable amount of money and time. But, there are steps you can take to ensure that the remodeling contractor you hire meets your needs. To make sure your remodeling needs are met and you still have a smile on your face when the project is done, here are 5 tips for selecting a remodeling contractor. - Always get more than 3 estimates on the job! While 3 is enough in some scenarios, you are better off if you get at least 5 (ideally 10) different bids. Take the bids, average them together and then narrow down your selection(s) to the ones whose bid comes closest to the average. This will help you ensure you get a good price.
- Keep in mind that just because the company is not listed on the Better Business Bureau or a site like Angie’s List does not mean they do exceptional, or not, work. This simply means that no one has filed a report or made a post about them. Be sure to ask for references that you can follow up on and that you go see samples of their work.
- Years of experience does not mean that their work is quality. Anyone can say that they do an outstanding job. Ask to see/talk to people who have hired them in the more distant past. Quality workmanship will stand the test of time!
- Be wary of “Today/This Week Only” deals! If you are being rushed to hire them on the spot, then find someone else. The “deal” you are being offered today will generally have “unexpected expenses” tomorrow.
- If the contractor asks for a large (more than half) of the money upfront, this is typically an indicator that they are not in good financial shape. A good contractor can usually purchase items on a 30 day credit account-especially if they have been in business a good length of time.
These are but a few tips that you will want to use for selecting a home remodeling company. Take the time to find a home remodeling company that cares about you and the job they are hired for, so you can be sure that you are pleased with the job. After all, it’s your home and you are the one living there! Many websites provide additional information on the topic of home remodeling and additions.
