Canada should be grateful all n.s. native sons don't stay home

Business,Business News,Business Opportunities
To my astonishment, my new memoir on workplace depression at theGlobe and Mail is on four bestseller lists — including theGlobe and Mail"s. As the Toronto Star noted, "It"s an event rare enoughin the Canadian publishing world to be considered a coup; aself-published non-fiction book has hit the Star"s bestsellerlist." But this isn"t about me, me, me. This is about my secretweapon, a native son of Nova Scotia named Bruce Walsh. He has that unique East Coast aura that gives him and otherMaritimers an advantage over everyone else in the country, anunpretentious, look-you-in-the-eye, no-hidden-agenda personalitythat opens doors and gets things done.

Getting a self-published book into stores is nearly impossible.Still, before Walsh came on board I had deals pending with adistributor and Indigo. As a first-time publisher, however, Ifigured I mainly would sell through PayPal on my website. "I forced you to understand why selling a book from abasement was fatal," said Walsh, 52, over breakfast atMcDonald"s. (Self-publishing involves a limited budget.) Then Dundurn, a mid-sized publisher, offered to distribute Out ofthe Blue. I told them I already had a distributor.

Walsh ignored me and raced over to their offices with a copy of thebook. He explained to me that two distributors were better than oneand said I needed Dundurn, which sells into Costco, Shoppers andLoblaws as well as airport kiosks and public libraries. More importantly, Walsh instantly grasped the book"s dualthemes: depression and suppression. (Three major corporations hadtried to squelch the book, which is why I had to self-publish.) "I"m an anti-censorship activist," he said, adding he remains outraged over his first battle, CanadaCustoms" import ban on gay books in the 1980s and 1990s. "My best friends were dying of AIDS and there was censorshipof information about safe sex." Walsh, a youthful man with ash-blond hair, apple cheeks and clearblue eyes, was born in Kentville.

He grew up unhappy in Bridgewaterand Truro. By 11, he was planning to commit suicide because he knew he was gayand he knew people hated gays. The day he came home from schoolintending to rummage around the medicine cabinet, his mother wasreading Mila 18, the Leon Uris novel about the Holocaust. Walsh had an epiphany.

"If the Germans were that wrong about the Jews, maybe theywere wrong about me," he said, in a YouTube video now shownin high schools. In Grade 6, he began reading voraciously about the Holocaust.Inspired by books, he later moved to Toronto and worked inpublishing. His activism over AIDS and Canada Customs burned him out. Deeplydepressed and nearly mute, he moved to Montreal and survived bycleaning houses and looking after dogs. He bounced back after two years and returned to the Torontopublishing scene.

He became director of marketing and publicity atMcClelland & Stewart and later helped launched LongPen,Margaret Atwood"s high-tech startup for remote signing. Today, Walsh works on projects he chooses. Recently his father,Jack Walsh, 84, sold his Bridgewater bungalow to an agency forconversion into a group home for three mentally disabled women. There was opposition. "My father said, ‘Sic "em."" The town caved.

Last week, Walsh and his siblings gave Jack, now living in theveterans unit of Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, an earlyFather"s Day present: a Queen"s Diamond Jubilee Medalfor his part in winning recognition for the heroism of merchantseamen in the Second World War. Nova Scotia hasn"t been able to keep all its sons at home. Some say that"s sad, but the rest of Canada should saythanks.
