AAP reported that BHP Billiton will move more than 3000 staff intoits newly completed office tower in Perth by October 2012. Despiteongoing speculation, the mining giant insists its globalheadquarters will remain in Melbourne. Over the next few months, Australia's biggest company plans tobring its Perth based iron ore, aluminum and nickel headquartersunder the one roof. BHP also hopes to quash, once and for all, rumors that it couldmove its headquarters from Melbourne to the resources hub of Perth. A BHP Billiton spokeswoman said more than 3000 employees weremoving in stages from multiple Perth offices into new waterfrontpremises at 125 St George's Terrace. She added that "Everyone willbe in there sometime during the third quarter of this calendaryear. BHP Billiton is not relocating its Australian headquarters toPerth. We are consolidating our staff who are in differentbuildings across Perth." As well as securing the naming rights to the new 45 storeyskyscraper, BHP has agreed to lease at least 75% of the premises. But it has no intention of purchasing the property, billed as thelargest commercial building in Western Australia. Brookfield Multiplex completed construction of the 234 meter,86,000 square meter Brookfield Place in late May 2012 and it plansto open the building around mid September 2012. BHP has also decided to secure a new lease at 171 Collins Street inMelbourne, dealing a blow to the City of Perth which wanted toattract more executives and professionals to the growing CBD. CMC Markets chief market strategist Mr Michael McCarthy said therewere no compelling reasons for BHP to stay in Melbourne. He saidthat "My guess is BHP will move their Australian headquarters toPerth." It comes after the company's chief executive Mr Marius Klopperstold a Perth breakfast on Wednesday that it was harder to convinceeast coast Australians to relocate for work than North Americans, particularly with the high cost of living. Meanwhile, Barrick Gold and Price Waterhouse Coopers are preparingto occupy the remaining space at Brookfield Place. One of the conditions of the BHP Billiton merger in 2001 was thatthe company's headquarters would remain in Australia. Source - AAP.
