Robert Jennings Bermuda is a blog attempting to trace the ancestry of the Jennings in The Bermudas, a British overseas territory located near Sargasso Sea named after Spanish captain Juan de Bermúdez who discovered it in 1505. One of the richest in the world The Bermudas or the Somers Isles derives its income from being an offshore financial centre and tourism. According to the CIA Factbook, the island has the fourth highest per capita income in the world. The Bermudas is actually composed of 181 islands with a total land mass of 53.3 square kilometres but only 20% of that is arable. Because of the limited area, the government has been relying on emigration to control overpopulation. During the American Revolution, more than 10,000 emigrated to America. That was half of the population of Bermuda at that time. Robert Jennings in his website mentions a Capt. William Jennings who was a pirate and member of Henry Morgan’s crew who jumped ship and eventually moved to North Carolina after marrying an Indian. Who is Robert Jennings? Robert Jennings is a senior relationship manager at the Government of Bermuda. He describes himself as an intellectual and optimistic person who craves for creating opportunities rather than waiting on life to happen. After graduating from the University of Ontario in Canada, he joined the Bermuda government in 1987 because he wanted to do something for the people. But he also wants to trace the lineage of the Jennings Although, Bermuda is a territory of the British and is not considered a country having no representative in the United Nations, its relationship with the United States is much deeper. The island even supplied the Americans with ships and gunpowder during its battle for independence from its British colonisers. Even today, more than 80% of its visitors are from the United States and Canada, owing to the proximity between borders. They were even mentioned in the 1985 article published by Richard Slatten and Elizabeth Van Moore entitled “The Descendants of Pocahontas: An Unclosed Case.” The article said that the Jennings who intermarried with the Rolfe/Relfe family. John Rolfe, it is said, settled in Bermuda for a while and even buried his wife and child there, and eventually married Pocahontas, a subject of a major Disney animated movie.
