Thanksgiving in the United States is celebrated on November 26th. In 1863, the President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national celebration that lasted three days. Since that time Thanksgiving has been celebrated on every fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving in United States is one of the major celebrations of the year, along Christmas, New Year's Day, Independence Day, Memorial Day and Labour Day. It is also known as one of the two important holidays of the winter, beside Christmas. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas most Americans are charged with many tasks that have to be done in shortest time. It’s a period full of events and dead-lines, however a beautiful one. The first American Thanksgiving, food that was put on the table consisted in fish, wild fowl, venison, berries and grains. These foods were considered a treat by the settlers and were actually a success for the table. Nowadays, the American Thanksgiving is celebrated with other courses like stuffed turkey with cranberry dressing, sweet potatoes, marshmallows and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. But it’s not necessary to eat like everybody else. If we like to keep the old tradition of serving corn and fish courses, we’re free to spare the turkey’s life for a year and cooking some dietetic meals. Many families can’t wait to celebrate Thanksgiving in the old way they use to every year. The tradition of sending cards for Thanksgiving has been replaced by many people with sending Thanksgiving ecards. They started to use e-cards for almost every celebration of the year, being easier to send and to receive them and having lower prices or no price at all. The electronic cards are also beautiful, having a touch of originality quite hard to find at normal cards. Thinking of the traditional American Thanksgiving, people have in mind a family game or a football match. They enjoy relaxing after dinner, by watching TV or playing games with their children. Some of them enjoy decorating their homes with various symbols of Thanksgiving, or even decorating the food on the table. It’s always nice to create some harvest scenes using cheese, corn and other ingredients to make figurines resembling humans, animals or birds. Maybe the foods we put on the table have changed over the years, however the meaning of the holiday remained the same. It is still considered a celebration of gratitude and reflection for the things we are thankful for as the money we make, the jobs we have and the people who are part of our lives. For every American person, this holiday may have a slightly different meaning, depending of age and education. Some of us find the true meaning in philanthropic activities, as giving gifts to the poor. For others, telling stories and playing with the children is the most important thing.
