The Use and How to Make Bias Bindings

Art and Culture
Bias tapes are used to bind bed quilts, or quilts that are and will be a lot of use. Binding makes it even more long-lasting. Even in case a thread or two breaks in the binding process or later on, only a small part of the binding is affected. Whereas, with the straight binding - a broken thread or two can run through the entire length of the quilt and which could be really daunting. Another type of binding known as straight of grain binding, however, is fine for smaller quilts, or wall hangings and much likes as it will help the quilt to keep its shape and strength which is not as much of a concern.

Such binding has the capability to stretch or curve itself according to the edges of the corset or the quilt without being wrinkled except few cases where the curve is extremely sharp. Bias Binding can be obtained from almost all the sewing shops locally and online. It is available in a variety of colors and is generally formed of shiny satin or cotton. Now the need to make one arises when one has some patterns and styles of the fabric that is hard to find which has the upright color and will suit the looks of the corset or the quilt after binding. It is always good to have a complimenting fabric which contrasts with the main fabric. For such situations it is important to know how to create one for yourself.

Bias Binding is basically the ribbon like binding that cover the corners and the edges of corsets or quilts or any other thing. Creating a binding can be real challenging at times, if you are one of those who find difficulty in figuring out how much fabric would be required and finding out what amount of bias you should cut from a square piece of fabric disregarding the requirement of the width of bias that one may require. Here is a simple solution:

• Determine the length and the width of the square piece of fabric and multiply both the numbers.

• Decide the width of the bias required. Divide the previously calculated number with this number. The result obtained will be the inches of the bias that will be obtained.

• In order to find out the number of yards, divide the number obtained in the last step by 36. The number 36 is the number of inches per yard.

For instance, get a good half meter of the fabric of your choice, and the other things which would be required is a 45 degree angle, a pair of scissors and an iron that will used for ironing in the folds. Now to make a start, use the 45 degree angle and place it on the top left corner of the fabric. Draw a line down at 45 degrees from the edge. Determine what width of the binding you require. If it is small as half a centimeter cut the strips 2cm wide, or wide as 1cm binding one may require 4cm strips. Measure the width vertically down at 90 degrees. After drawing all the lines cut the fabrics and sew them. After that leave 5mm seam allowance and then iron the creases.
