Taking your car for a yearly MOT test is a legal requirement for all vehicles in the UK. The MOT test guarantees the vehicle is roadworthy and safe for yourself and other drivers on the road, along with making sure a safe quantity of exhaust emissions are given off from the vehicle. Many people understand they must take their vehicle for a MOT test each year, but they don't comprehend the history behind the test. Please continue reading to learn the history and launch of the MOT test to all UK vehicle drivers. Going completely back to the 1950's, this was the time when it became obvious that many vehicles of all styles were becoming un-roadworthy and harmful. It was noticeable that as the vehicles clocked up more mileage, the more unsafe the vehicle was. Due to this finding in the safeness of the cars, in 1960 the Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples, set up a system that required all vehicles over 10 years old to have some simple safety checks carried out every year. The checks included looking into factors such as the lights, steering and brakes. This was named the Ministry of Transport test (or how we now know it, as the MOT test), but at the time people used to call it the ten year test. As time passed by the test gradually became more comprehensive and thorough, and in 1967 the rules stated that all cars over 3 years old needed to have an MOT test. Looking at a current day MOT tests it is obvious how much the test has altered, as now we look at more sophisticated elements such as: - Exhaust emissions
- ABS (Anti-braking System)
- Brake fluid
- Power steering
- Suspension
- The vehicle identification number
- And so much more!
As cars have become more advanced over time, moving forward from the classic Austin Mini to current day Vauxhall Insignia's, the MOT test has progressed just as these cars have. Modern cars now come with power steering, advanced braking systems, tinted windows and much more, but back in the 1960's cars didn't have some of these features. As a result, in order to stop any safety difficulties happening with these new functions within cars, the MOT Sheffield test checks over the main components. It is more than easy to say that the MOT test has modified greatly since it's launch in the 1960's!
