Carp angling tends to be one of those sports that you get 2 camps of anglers. The 1st camp is the all-weather anglers who will go out regardless if the temperature is 30 degrees or if it is -3 degrees. The other camp, is anglers who just fish in decent weather. As Autumn enters with windier and less admirable climates you will find less and less anglers on the lake. This no way means that the fish aren't biting! Typically I have found the best time of year to angle carp is in the Autumn. The fish are more perky than in warmer sunnier climbs and they are starting to bulk up for the long wintertime ahead. Cool water means that there is reduced fishing pressure and the carp are less warey about that big pile of bait on the lake bed than if there were a large number of lines in the water. Angling pressure can really turn carp off feeding so if you have had an unfullfiling summer, it may well be worth going out on days when you suppose there will be less people on the lake. If at all possible try and leave the weekends to the pleasure anglers and leave it on the Monday after when the carp will still be wary. I've found some of my most successful fishing days to be on a Wednesday. It would be interesting to hear if you have a certain day that you find more productive. Leave your comments below. Okay, the conditions may not be favorable, with a frigid wind down your neck or rain down your sleeve but with the appropriate clothing and kit you can have a pleasant time without getting hyperthermia! Using an efficient layering system you will find that even the chilliest days on the lake could be more than manageable. Begin by abandoning the denims and a t-shirt. Try getting a good base layer such as the Trakker Fleecy Base Layer and adding a jumper to that, like my beloved Diem ASBO hoodie. For the downstairs region, try a set of bib and braces. You might feel a bit odd and yes the Missus may laugh, but when leaning over you won't get that big chill going down your bum crack! Try the Diem Bib and brace for good value and warmth. Don't forget to pack a stove and kettle to make yourself a nice brew which will thaw yourself up if the elements really start to pull! A nice cuppa tea will make you feel more comfortable and make your day that bit more gratifying. One last point, with Autumn coming you have one challenge and that is to make sure that leaves and other detrious will not impede your rig presentation. I have found many times when fishing in the Autumn that your hook bait can very simply get burried under a load of crap and not ever be seen by the carp. Try putting to use a pop up rig to combat this. Most of all head out and enjoy yourself, buy some good colder weather gear and catch a monster!
