There is now a new way for breast reconstructions. Fat transfer is fast becoming the popular option for breast augmentation procedures. According to a U.S. researcher, more and more women are opting for breast augmentation through fat transfer. The procedure involves taking fat from a certain area of the body for use on another body part such as the breasts. Popular body areas where body fat can be obtained includes the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. One beneficiary of the popular plastic surgery procedure is Chicago resident Susan McLain. The 49-year old patient recently had a double mastectomy. She was also treated using chemotherapy with radiation. The procedure which involves the use of radiation and removal of her lymph nodes and breast tissue resulted to a turf or divot on her skin. This wasn't also corrected after the breast reconstruction. To solve the divot problem, the Loyola University Health System near Chicago reverted to fat transfer. Composed of a multidisciplinary team, the surgeons used silicone breast implants to place tissue expanders that would prepare McLain for the reconstructive breast surgery. The surgeons then proceeded with the fat transfer. Fat was extracted through liposuction from the patient's abdomen. After its concentration, the fat was then relocated to the area where the implants will be placed. The additional procedure greatly balanced the symmetry of the breasts thus resulting to a more natural finish. In a statement, McLain maintains that she feels she "look great now". "I am thrilled with the outcome," she said. "You would never know that I had cancer." Loyola University Health system board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Victor Cimino shared that fat transfers are fast gaining popularity. It comes second to the most commonly sought breast reconstructive surgery procedures. However, Dr. Cimino advised that surgical techniques using fat transfers aren't limited to the chest area. He said that the popular procedure could also be recommended for the rejuvenation of the face, lips, and hands. He also said that fat transfers greatly contribute to improving and adding fullness to the said areas of the body. With such options, women who undergo certain surgery and radiation therapies need not worry anymore. While the procedure could negatively affect the appearance of the breasts, fat transfers can now be the solution. "Women who had fat transfer appreciate the fact that their own tissue will be used to naturally improve the look and feel of their breasts after plastic surgery ."
