Natural remedies or home remedies can offer comfort and success for a host of conditions and ills. My adorable Great Aunt Dell lived by using natural remedies. I was impressed at a very young age by home remedies. I remember every morning Aunt Dell had her cup of ‘clear tea.’ This was hot water, half of a lemon squeezed into the water and a teaspoon of honey, black strap molasses or maple syrup. She would sip it and soon thereafter, trot off the bathroom for her ‘morning constitutional.’ Many years later, I can smile at her ritual of taking care of her colon. Another method for assisting the bowels is the use of castor oil pack, especially when there is lower abdominal pain. Use a piece of wool or cotton flannel that is two thicknesses and about 12” X 17”. Saturate it with hexane-free castor oil and place the cloth on the abdomen from the bottom of the ribs to the top of the hipbones. It can be covered with a piece of plastic to keep the oil from soiling our clothing or bedding. Many use a plastic garbage bag while others use plastic wrap around the body. A heating pad or hot water bottle is placed on top of the plastic for the hour treatment. These are suggested three times per week or as needed. More is definitely better and some sleep with the pack covering the abdomen. The flannel doesn’t need to be washed, just stored in a plastic bag until the next application. Additional oil is used for each treatment. These packs increase the detoxification process, strengthen the immune system and decrease pain. There are numerous ways to assist the bowels and reduce constipation. There are four pieces that are important: those being water, oil, fiber and probiotics. These are determined by body size since one size doesn’t fit all. A petite woman who weighs 108 pounds certainly doesn’t need the same amount of water as a six foot tall man weighing in at 225 pounds. This shows the importance of individualizing all programs.
