Monuments are often thought of as structures that are built to memorialize a person, culture or event. But monuments can be many different things. In the Western United States, some of the most famous monuments are designated National Monuments, which can be structures or natural features that help to provide identity to the nation. In the West there are several monuments that are easily recognized and serve as beacons for tourism each year. While visiting the Western United States, there are places of interest that travelers should see to fully appreciate the natural beauty and history of the country. Devils Tower The first national monument was Devils tower in Wyoming. This monolithic rock rises high above its surroundings in the Black Hills, and the plateau at the top is more than 1,200 feet from its base and more than 5,000 feet above sea level. Devils Tower was named a national monument in 1906 by Theodore Roosevelt. It is a sacred Native American site for several tribes, and it is also a popular rock-climbing area for many visitors. It gained national attention as a significant filming site for the Steven Spielberg film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Giant Sequoias The biggest trees on earth are located in California. The Giant Sequoia National Monument (fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia) is home to many of the largest examples of this species. There are 38 groves of sequoias included in the monument's property near Dunlap, California. President Bill Clinton declared this area a national monument in April of 2000. Some of the trees located here are more than 300 feet tall and many are 20 feet across, with one that has a 35-foot diameter. The Boole Tree is the specimen with the largest diameter, and it reaches 275 feet into the air. It is thought to be the sixth largest tree in California. Little Bighorn Little Bighorn (nps.gov/libi) is the site of a bloody battle in 1876 between the U.S. Army’s 7th Calvary and the warriors of the Lakota and Cheyenne tribes. Lt. Col. George Custer and all 263 of his men lost their lives in the battle against several thousand Native Americans who mounted an attack in a last-ditch effort to preserve their way of life in the plains of Montana. Today, the monument commemorates the battle and the lives lost on both sides of the conflict. The 7th Calvary Monument is a granite shaft standing on the spot where Custer made his last stand. Nearby, the Indian Memorial is a circular monument to the more than 100 men, women and children who died in the fighting. Mount St. Helens Shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, 1980, the most violent volcanic eruption in recent American history happened at Mount St. Helens (fs.usda.gov) in Washington. The eruption was so powerful that it accompanied a 5.1 earthquake and packed a punch that destroyed 150 square miles of forest in mere moments. What was left behind was a flat, seemingly lifeless landscape that was named a national monument the following year. The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument now stretches over 110,000 acres and welcomes many visitors each year.
