When you are looking for a holiday that combines stunning landscapes, skiing for a variety of levels, resort pampering and a variety of off piste activities for those with young ones, making the trip from Geneva to Chamonix is an idea you should consider. Chamonix is mostly known as a ski resort area. It was made famous by being the host of the very first Winter Olympic Games in 1924 and today is a great place to go for a family holiday, both in the winter and summer. It sits near the highest mountain in Europe, Mont Blanc, and is comprised of 16 hamlets and villages. Travelling from Geneva to Chamonix will also allow you to take your family on the famous cable car that connects Chamonix to the top of Aiguille du Midi. Built during the mid 1950s, the cable car was the world’s longest for two decades, and still holds the record for the steepest ascent. Children will love the 20 minute ride to the top of the “Needle of the South”, where they can view the pistes and valleys from above. Animals, parks and nature reserves When travelling from Geneva to Chamonix with small children, there are loads of things to do as a family that are fun and can educate while keeping everyone engaged. If your children are animal lovers, head over to the Parc Animalier de Merlet, which is a park with freely roaming animals. Here, families can walk in the habitats of over 80 mountain animals. Take time to walk around and visit the areas where you can see chamois, marmots, mountain goats, llamas, and the petite sika deer. If, after visiting the Merlet park, you and your young ones want to get even closer to the animals, consider a trip to the Elevage de Saint-Bernard aux Houches, which is a breeding centre for the large, lovable St. Bernard mountain dogs. Here, you can visit with the dogs and breeders and learn all about the breed and their importance in this mountain setting - often you can get to visit with the puppies too. Outdoor activities in all seasons If you find yourself travelling from Geneva to Chamonix for a holiday in the high season, there are plenty of ski schools through which your children can gain their “ski legs”. All over the resort there are instructors dedicated entirely to children; there is even a group called the Panda Club where they can ski down special beginners slopes. Alternatively, you can plan to go on a sledge trip around the valley to experience what it’s like to travel by dog sled – always a family favourite. Or, if you visit the resort in the height of summer, there are plenty of climbing classes for children to give them a taste of the mountaineering spirit! For a real adventure, for brave kids as young as ten, there is the option of tandem paragliding - an exciting activity for kids and adults alike and definitely one of the most unique ways to experience the stunning surrounding landscape.
