Located in the south-eastern part of France, in the Rhône-Alpes Region just five kilometres from the Italian border, is the charming resort commune of Val d’Isere. Travelling from the transport hub of Geneva to Val d’Isere is easy and quick and, once there, the resort provides plenty to do. The town has been inhabited since the Roman times and received parish rights in 1637; the parish church was built in 1664 and still stands in the centre of the town. During the 1992 Winter Olympic Games, the men’s downhill race was held on the Face de Bellevarde and other alpine skiing events were held around the area too. After a short flight from the UK, transfers from Geneva to Val d’Isere will take you into the heart of the area, most recognisable for its interesting chalet-style architecture. When you aren’t out enjoying the winter sports, take a wander along the streets which, along with Tignes, are considered to be part of “the most beautiful ski area in the world.” Skiing Located in a steep valley, the ski slopes here have been attracting the world’s most hardcore skiers for years. People have been coming from Geneva to Val d’Isere to ski since it became a resort in the 1930s. There are three main ski areas in the valley: Le Fornet, Le Solaise and Bellvardes. They are all of varying difficulty; from the easier slopes, boarders and skiers can overlook the stunning views and watch other skiers hurtle down the advanced pistes negotiating the bumps and jumps. Two of these slopes are accessible from the village: Bellvardes is the mountain that is most famous for the Face de Bellevarde, and its other slope is the home of the FIS Audi men's World Cup. This slope is known as one of the most challenging on the men’s cup technical tour and, even if you aren’t up for the challenge, makes a wonderful site for spectating. Summer Skiing If you happen to have the itch to go skiing in the summer time, fret not, you can still travel from Geneva to Val d’Isere and get a bit of action on the glacial slopes. There is a short but intense summer ski season that is one of the most popular places in the Alps – it is well worth checking out. Winter Walking If you want a unique experience [aside from skiing!] once you have arrived on your transfer from Geneva to Val d’Isere, strap on your boots and head over to the Espace Killy’s Grand Motte or Pissaillas glaciers. Here you can book a guide who will take you on a hike up into the glaciers for stunning views of the pits and valleys – it’s an unforgettable experience. And just because there is a raft of snow over the region doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a wonderful hike along the trails that criss-cross the valley. Throughout the region there are over 24 kilometres of marked well-groomed and cared for paths that provide an excellent way to spend a day or two in the commune if you fancy a break from skiing.
