Sandstone is easily susceptible to chipping and flaking, and should be handled carefully. Sandstone is soft and easy to carve, making it ideal for a wide variety of projects, even for novice stone workers. Working with sandstone will generally require chisels, a hammer, rasps, grinders, riffles and sandpaper. Since sandstone has a high silica content, it should always be worked in a space with good ventilation, and crafters should wear protective respirators. Making Beads Small shards, chips or corners of sandstone can easily be worn down to make small beads. Break the sandstone into pieces of the desired size. Using a small drill bit on a low power setting, drill a hole through the desired portion of the sandstone piece. Smooth the edges with fine-toothed rasps and sandpaper. Using rifflers to further smooth the stone can result in a glossy texture and softer feel; and you can lacquer or varnish the bead to protect it from chipping. Coasters Smaller, thin pieces of sandstone can be smoothed with sandpaper to fashion coasters. Once the desired shape and size is attained, place small, no-slip rubber feet (often available at craft stores, already with adhesive) on one side of the coaster. The other side may be painted, if desired. Since sandstone is highly absorbent, it makes ideal coasters. Candleholders You can easily fashion columnar or flat candleholders with sandstone. Using a pencil, trace the desired shape onto a block of sandstone and carefully grind and chip away at the stone until the basic form of your desired candleholder is revealed. Use rasps and sandpaper to refine the design, and test the flat surface of the foot frequently to ensure that it stands well throughout the process. Sculptures You can fashion sandstone into sculptures of any size; the only limitation is the size of the stone and a crafter's skill. Small sculptures can be used as bookends or paperweights or given as gifts. After outlining the shape of your design on all the raw stone's surfaces, grind and chip away until you are able to highlight the details on a more refined shape using rasps, picks and sandpaper. Do you pay much attention to art in your daily life? Well, in fact, you can make many things into art if you carefully do what you have in hand. Nowadays, there are more and more people paying much attention to limestone craft and gain much happiness from it, so do I. In my spare time I often get together with my friends and make crafts with them, from which I become conversational and fall in love with daily life. In my opinion, beauty exists everywhere as long as you have a pair of keen eyes.
