Purchasing a high quality mattress is an investment in your quality of life. Because we spend approximately one-third of our lives in bed, selecting the proper mattress usually means splurging a little more to make sure your mattress is both comfortable and durable. To prolong the life of your mattress, it is important to provide the maximum in protection from liquids, dirt, dust, stains and more. Mattress protectors and mattress pads that form a barrier between the mattress and the bottom sheet are the best means of enhancing the durability of your mattress and protect it from wear and tear. There are a range of mattress protectors and mattress pads on the market including separate covers for your mattress and box spring. A range of fabrics and styles include options such as flame resistance, hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and water resistance. Depending on the degree of protection you are looking for, you can even purchase mattress encasements that stop the penetration of bed bugs, dust mites, and pet dander from getting into your mattress. Available in all sizes ranging for crib mattress protectors to king and California king, pads and protectors are generally machine washable so they can be cleaned on a regular basis, an especially important feature for beds for babies and young children. If you inherit a mattress set from family members or friends or buy a used set, a mattress protector will give you an added measure of comfort since it will provide that protective layer between you and the mattress for added cleanliness. Whether you decide on a mattress encasement or a mattress pad for of protection is largely based on personal preference. Some considerations include whether you want to be able remove the barrier easily for washing, whether you are trying to provide maximum protection against liquids including bodily fluids, and whether or not you are concerned about bed bugs or allergens. Mattress Encasements Mattress encasements are the best solution for those suffering from allergies since they cover the entire mattress and box springs. An encasement protects against allergens such as dust, dust mites, pen dander, pollen, and even dead skin. The same is true for bed bugs. Mattress encasements with a locking zipper system keep bedbugs out of your mattress. Regular washing of sheets and other bedding are still required, of course, to maximize protection for your entire bed. Mattress Pads The typical mattress pad covers the top of the mattress along with the sides. Fitted pads are available in waterproof and water repellent materials and generally have some padding that goes over the top of the mattress with elastic sides and corners, similar to a fitted sheet, to help it stay in place. Another version of mattress pads has a top pad only, which is anchored down by elastic at each corner to fit under the mattress. Some people like to add extra cushioning above the mattress such as a memory foam pad or egg-crate style pad. Goose down or feather-filled pads are also available for added softness. Whatever your choice, be sure that the mattress encasement or mattress pad you select is not only the right size for your bed such as twin, queen, king or California king, but also that it has the ability to cover the depth of the mattress. This is especially important if you have a pillow-top mattress or are adding extra layers such as a memory foam pad or egg-crate pad.
