Bijapur is a prominent place of Karnataka, a state of rare art and architectures. Bijapur is the district head quarter of Bijapur district and this place holds a great importance for its unique historical monuments. Geographically, this place is located 530km north east of Bangalore, the capital state of Karnataka. This place bears a historical value that dates back to 11th century. According to the legends, the place was founded by Chalukya dynasty and during this period it was known as Vijayapura. The place became known as Bijapur when it was ruled by Bahamani sultanate of Gulbarga in 14th century. Later in 15th century, this place came under the the Adil shah dynasty. During this period, this place experienced the highest architectural growth along with its well sculptured monuments which are beautifully dotted around the city. After independence of India the place became the part of bombay and 1956 it was brought back to Karnataka state. The city is elegantly decorated with several rare architectural excellencies. Among them Gol Gumbaz is the most venerable one which is also regarded as one of the largest domes in the world. Ibrahim Rauza is an architectural wonder and Jumma Masjid is another prominent place with its unique architecture and known as the largest mosque in this area. Malik-e-Maidan which is world famous and designated as the largest medieval cannon of the world. The city is honored as a most heritage place because of the unique structures like Asar Mahal, Chand Bawdi, Gagan Mahal, Barakaman and Upri Buruj. The city is alluringly embellished with several well maintained gardens. This place is distinctly characterized for its rich culture and heritage. The people of this region is simple and hospitable. Majority populace are Hindu along with the considerable number of christian and Muslims. The city is the home of both Aryan and Dravidian descent along with Hindu lingayat. The most prominent festival of this place is Bijapur Music Festival which is regarded as the cultural asset of Karnataka and conducted every year by the Government of Karnataka. Beside this, the fair of Shri Siddheshwar Temple which happens in the time of Makar Sankranti festival is a famous fair. Other well celebrated festivals are Holi, Asar Mahal Urs festival and Deepavali. The nearest airport to Bijapur is Belgaum which is connected to Mumbai. The airport is 205 km far from Bijapur. Bijapur railway station is connected with all major cities of southern region and others like Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Hubli. KSRTC bus services connect this place with the neighbor places of Karnataka and other states. Bijapur experiences moderate weather except in summers. October to February is the best time to visit this place. There are many more equally magnificent structures like Asar Mahal, Chand Bawdi, Gagan Mahal, Barakaman and Upri Buruj. Besides these the city also has several sprawling gardens. Bijapur still maintains its royal character and the many monuments are sure to acquaint one with the rich culture and tradition of the area.
