Woodcarving is perhaps one of the oldest crafts, having been practiced for thousands of years. However, carving sculptures out of wood is an art that takes time, practice, patience and the right tools. Fortunately if you're willing to put in all of this then you can learn to carve wood into a variety of different shapes and sculptures, depending on your own visions and personal creativity. Instructions as follows: Firstly, brainstorm and decide on what you're going to carve. Whether you want to carve a small, fanciful house, a lawn gnome or something else, you need to have the image firmly in your mind. Sketch it out on paper if you need to so that you know exactly what you're going to carve. Secondly, draw the outline for the shape on the exterior of your piece of wood using a dark pencil or a marker. You need to design and think in three dimensions for your carving, and the lines you draw on the wood help you visualize the sculpture by showing what parts need to be removed. Thirdly, remove the larger chunks of wood by using the chisels and mallet. Place the chisel with the blade going with the grain, never across the grain, and strike the opposite end with the mallet to dig the blade into the wood and peel away the sections that don't belong on your design. Continue to carve with the mallet and chisel or chisels until you have the rough shape of your sculpture carved out of the wood. Fourthly, use your carving knives to refine the rough shape of the sculpture and plane it. Always push or pull with the grain, never cross grain because that could gouge or split the wood. The knives, along with the use of files and rasps, can sand and peel out the dings and gouges formed by the hammer and chisel to help you create a smoother sculpture. Fifthly, draw new outlines for the details that you want the sculpture to have. Areas of a face, patterns of fur or clothing are all examples. These marks will help guide your hand as you keep carving in the details with your knives and rasps. Add more detail until you have formed your sculpture into a shape you like, but which is still rough from cutting. Sixthly, sand the sculpture smooth while keeping all of the details in place. Once you sand off all the imperfections left from the cuts and gouges, you should have a complete sculpture. After the sanding is complete you could sand or paint the sculpture, but that is up to you as the sculptor.
