How to Build a Stone Pathway

Business
It isn’t necessary to be skilled at Old-World stone masonry to lay a beautiful stone pathway. If you’re fortunate enough to have a strong back and a great eye for jigsaw puzzles, you can build a garden pathway just about anywhere on your property. One ton of stone covers about 90 square feet. These instructions will create a pathway that is three feet wide and about 70 feet long, requiring about three tons of stone. For this project, a limestone called Chilton was used, but feel free to use whatever is locally available. Landscape suppliers can help you to select the amount of stone you will actually need. A general idea of how much stone is needed can be obtained by measuring the length of your proposed path and multiplying this number by its width to determine the square footage. Then add 15 percent to the result. Divide the square footage of your path by 108 to calculate how many cubic yards of sand you’ll need for Instructions as follows: Firstly, use stakes and string to determine the curve of your pathway. Delineate the path’s edge with spray paint along the outlined edges. Secondly, remove the sod in the marked area with a sod cutter. Set the cutter to maximum depth to minimize any extra digging. Dig out the pathway to about 5 inches deep to allow for 3 inches of sand and 2 inches of stone. Thirdly, pour and pack gravel into an 8-inch deep trench for the retaining wall footing. Spread gravel in 2-inch layers, packing each layer with a tamper before adding the next. Use a level and straightedge to level the final layer before packing it down. Fourthly, stack stones for the low retaining wall on the compacted gravel base. Stagger the joints in the stones for strength and set each row back 1/2 inch behind the face of the stones beneath so that the wall is “leaning into” the hill. Pack soil behind the stones as you build up the stone wall. Fifthly, tamp the gravel in 2-inch layers to form an 8-inch deep base beneath the step. Sixthly, set 6 x 8-inch wall stone into a 3-inch bed of sand to form the step. Settle and level the stones with a rubber mallet or a hammer and block of wood. Then fill behind each of the step stones with some well-packed sand. Set the pathway stones even with the top of the step. Seventhly, spread a 3-inch layer of sand over the pathway. Use a rake to smooth the sand to about 2 inches below the lawn’s surface. Eighthly, arrange the stone on the sand, mixing shapes and colors to create a natural-looking path. Leave about 2 inches between stones for plants to fill in. Ninthly, tie a string to stakes about an inch above the assumed finished height of the path for a guide. The string should follow the natural slope of the path; it need not be level. Adjust the depth of the sand so the tops of the stone align evenly under the string. Wiggle the stones into place and settle them down into the sand by pounding them down with a rubber mallet. Tenthly, fill in the cracks between stones with a 50/50 mix of potting soil and sifted compost. Spread this mixture and sweep it into the cracks with a broom. Eleventh, plant creeping thyme or another durable spreading shrub into the larger spaces. Dig down into the sand to allow room for its root system. Loosen the roots and spread them in the hole, then refill around the plant with potting mix and finish by watering the plant. In short, as an outstanding business E-platform of promoting stone industry, we have finally become the global top-ranking service provider of trade information, providing the most comprehensive, accurate, and efficient international stone business information for stone enterprises and company all over the world.
