Local female university students launched the campaign to"Occupy Men's Restrooms" last Sunday, calling on thegovernment to increase the stalls for women in public toilets. The students showed up last Sunday morning at a public toilet atYuexiu Park, urging men to give up their restroom temporarily forwomen who had a long queue in front of their restroom. "We have decided to launch the ‘Occupy Men's Restrooms'campaign to stir people's concern over the lack of women's toiletstalls," said Li Maizi, one of the students. "The number of toilet stalls for men and women is the same inmost local public toilets," said Li, "but it takes moretime for women to use the toilet than men, so you always see a longqueue in front of the women's restroom but the men's restroom isalways empty, which is unfair." Miss Huang, a student from the Guangdong University of ForeignStudies, echoed Li's complaint.
"The male students at my university are far outnumbered by thefemale students, but the number of stalls for men and women isstill the same, which brought a lot of inconvenience to the femalestudents," said Huang. The students thus called on the local government to set up moretoilet stalls for women in public toilets. "We want the numberof stalls for women to at least double that for men." Mr. Wu, a citizen who was waiting for his wife outside the toiletlast Sunday, agreed that there should be more women's stalls in thepublic toilets. "I have to wait a long time for my wife when she goes to therestroom, which is always over-crowded.
The men's restroom,meanwhile, is empty, which is a waste of time and resources,"said Wu, "so I definitely agree that there should be morewomen's stalls." The local city management authorities stated in a regulationpublished in March, 2011 that the number of women's stalls shouldbe 1.5 times that for men's stalls in the newly-constructed,renovated and expanded public toilets. But the problem is the number of women's stalls will not change inthe existing public toilets unless they are renovated or expanded,which means women will still be making long queues outside theirrestrooms for the foreseeable future. "Increasing women's stalls will not only meet the need of thewomen but also turn Guangzhou into a better city," said KeQianting, head of the gender education forum of the local SunYat-sen University. "The long queues outside the women's restroom will affect theimage of the city in the long run, and if we solve that problem itwill definitely make Guangzhou a better place to be," Ms.
