European monuments are part of the rich history of countries like Greece, Italy and England. Some ancient monuments have history dating back to the year 80 A.D. Learn about the culture and how it has impacted societies of today. No.1 Stonehenge According to National Geographic, Stonehenge is one of the world's most iconic archaeological sites. The Stonehenge monument is located in Wiltshire, England. Ancient Britons who built the monument more than 4,600 years ago, left no written record of its meaning or purpose. Stonehenge has remained a tourist attraction for centuries. The monument consists of sandstone blocks weighing an estimated 25 tons each. The horseshoe formation of sandstone blocks is believed to have taken more than 20 million hours to construct, according to National Geographic. Every year, thousands of people gather at Stonehenge to watch the sunrise on the day of summer solstice. No.2 Old Sarum Castle Old Sarum Castle is an ancient monument erected around 1069 near Salisbury, England, on a hill fort that was built around 500 B.C. The monument site features the ruins of a castle built on a motte, an artificial mound. Visitors also can see the remains of an ancient church and Bishop's Palace at the monument. The Old Sarum site has revealed archaeological evidence of a Neolithic community that occupied the hilltop area back around 3000 B.C. In the iron castle's heyday, it was used as a shelter from Vikings. The Normans also used the Old Sarum Castle for protection, building a stone wall around it and a deep, dry moat to keep Vikings away. What is left of the Old Sarum Castle is now part of British history and is a public monument for visitors to see. No.3 the Coliseum of Rome The Coliseum of Rome is a monument in Italy. The coliseum was the first amphitheater built in Rome, according to GreatBuildings.com. The great arena holds seating for 50,000 people. A set of rooms were built below the wooden arena floor to hold wild animals for events. Roman builders included 80 different entrances so large crowds could maneuver easily about the coliseum. The Coliseum of Rome has been one of Rome's most famous monuments since its completed construction in 80 AD. No.4 the Acropolis The Acropolis of Athens is a historical monument in Greece. Acropolis means "upper city," according to AthensGuide.com. Many cities and states in ancient Greece were built around an acropolis. Ancient Greeks would go to the acropolis as a place of safety in times of invasion. The Parthenon is one of the buildings built around the acropolis by ancient Greeks. It took nine years to build and was completed in 438 B.C. Tourists can easily visit the Greek structures as modern generations have built pedestrian streets and restaurants around the ancient monument. It takes a hike to the top of the Acropolis of Athens, but the view of the ancient Greek buildings is worth the climb.
