It is everywhere; it is a growing concern; and, it is called vocal abuse. While chronic hoarseness or a persistent sore throat may be caused by post nasal drip or even some antihistamines, there is a large percentage of those who are suffering either or both of these symptoms and are not sick. It is even possible that you may be losing your voice by the end of the day. |
Voice misplacement, as well as yelling or talking for great lengths of time, is the problem. And, unless you change the cause, it will only continue. In addition, it will probably get worse, especially as you age. There is good news however. You can get rid of the abuse by changing the way you place your voice.
You have 5 resonators responsible for voiced sound. These include the voice box, throat, mouth, nasal, and chest cavities.
Most people use only 4 of these resonators to produce sound. The one that is not included in the 5 is the chest cavity. [Voices in which the chest cavity is being used sound like that of James Earl Jones, Sean Connery, Kate Beckinsale, and Diane Sawyer. Voices in which the chest cavity is not in use sound like that of Don Johnson and Fran Drescher – in both cases, their voices are being powered and amplified primarily through their nasal cavities.]
When you use your chest as your primary sounding board, you will:
1. immediately relieve the stress or strain to the throat and vocal folds (cords). There is no doubt that vocal abuse is individual. Some people can push their voice hard from their throat all day long and experience no vocal problems. Many more, however, have difficulty speaking for great lengths of time. Campaigning, rooting for your favorite sports team, coaching, training, teaching, and even just talking on the phone all day are just a few of the activities that can cause vocal abuse.
2. discover a richer, warmer, deeper voice; and,
3. be able to increase your volume without shouting.
Do not leave this problem to chance. If your speaking voice is important to you, either professionally or personally, then you will have to make the change because there is no cure, no pill, and no magic remedy to stop the abuse. It is only after you change your vocal placement that will you hear and feel the difference.
