The Anorexic Writer is one who starves herself of many things. She becomes so wrapped up in what she's writing that she neglects interaction with her family, friends, and colleagues. She becomes so consumed with the project she's writing that she even neglects a properly balanced nutritional diet and exercise. The Anorexic Writing diet is one that should never be attractive. It most often begins when you have a writing project on your desk that you are excited about. Adrenaline pumping, you dive head-first into the writing, without planning or seeing the big picture. Anorexic writers generally suffer from weight loss, as well as mental deprivation. Not only does the anorexic writer starve himself of social settings, but sometimes he goes forgoes eating for long bouts of writing. A writer gone anorexic can usually be spotted by some of these symptoms: Dark circles under the eyes Extended writing time (many hours of writing before breaks) Poor self-esteem Feeling like their work is never good enough Inability to release their writing into the public Inability to apply for writing positions they are qualified for Refuses anyone to read their writing Anxiety over not being able to write anything of worth The anorexic writer cannot always be spotted by her outer appearance. While a true anorexic is noticeable by her boniness, the anorexic writer starves her inner writing soul. This, my friends, is the saddest plight of all. Most anorexic writers deal with these symptoms by turning out draft after draft because the final copy is never "perfect". They work tirelessly on a single manuscript for years, cutting away sentences, paragraphs and chapters, only to trash the manuscript after they've chopped it to pieces and begin again from scratch. The anorexic mentality of a writer prevents him from seeing the beauty in his own writing. Even though others point it out to him and encourage him, the anorexic writer can only see the fattiness of his words. An anorexic writer almost always has a deep fear of his work never being good enough. When his anorexic writing diet has become a way of life, he might even believe that he has to continuously work on one project, even though it will never reach perfection in his eyes. How To Heal Anorexic Writing The anorexic writing diet is not an easy one to change. It requires diligence and patience to change the habits that have been created over a long period of time. If you recognize yourself as having been on an anorexic writing diet, here are a few tips to help... WRITE FAST. One of the first steps to take towards healing is to practice writing fast. Turn off your inner critic and just write. I know this sounds easier than it is, but with time and practice, you'll learn it becomes easier. SET A WRITING SCHEDULE. Anorexic writers often toil endlessly at the keyboard. One way to change this bad habit is to set a writing schedule. Many times, you'll be forced to cut huge chunks of time. Don't be afraid...just do it. GET A HOBBY. When you set a writing schedule and cut your writing time, you're going to need something else to fill that time with. Otherwise you'll return to the writing. Do something you've always wanted to do. Fly a kite. Take a watercolor painting class. Learn Chinese. Get out of the house or do something else to take your mind off writing for a while. INVITE A CLOSE WRITING FRIEND INTO YOUR INNER CIRCLE. Writers have a tendency to isolate themselves, especially when working from home. Isolation is not the ideal situation for an anorexic writer, so to combat this, invite a close, trusted writing friend into your inner circle. Talk about your fears with him, share your worries. There's nothing better than a writing friend who understands where you're coming from. TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME. Don't try to rush into changes too fast. Sometimes these things require slow and steady progress. As you learn how to balance writing with living, you'll soon discover that your writing is much better than you ever imagined. You'll suddenly discover that your work is gorgeous, and not some ugly, fatty writing that must be chopped into pieces. PLAN AHEAD. Sometimes the lack of planning is what leads to an anorexic writing diet. To prevent this, before you begin any new writing project, map out your action plan. Determine an appropriate time length for writing, editing, and polishing. Gather any material needed. Conduct interviews. When you have a solid plan mapped out, it won't be quite to easy to become encumbered by all the tiny details and lose sight of the target goal. essay papers
